“I appreciate you.”

That simple, heartfelt phrase was uttered countless times each day by Joan Trew, always delivered in her warm, never-failing Alabamian accent. She said it to fellow agents, buyers, sellers, and anyone lucky enough to cross her path. And the great thing about Joan was that she meant it.

Joan Trew passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Dec. 31 at the age of 92. There will be a celebration of life at 11 a.m. Jan. 11 at University Baptist Church, 2720 Wabash Ave., with a reception immediately following at the church.

Her legacy in real estate, philanthropy, and civic leadership is second to none. Much has been written about Joan’s storied career and her contributions to Fort Worth. Rather than recount her many accolades, this tribute comes directly from the people who knew her best — her Williams Trew Real Estate family. Their reflections offer a glimpse into the remarkable life of a woman who inspired so many.

Reflections of Joan – From Her Williams Trew Family

Joan Trew and Martha Williams

“Joan and I started at William Rigg in 1979. She was the Energizer Bunny. Her clients adored her, many even calling her ‘Mama-T.’ She was the best business partner anyone could ask for, and I wouldn’t have moved forward in starting Williams Trew without her partnership with Marshall and me. We were the perfect team.”

– Martha Williams (Partner)

“Joan never met a stranger and worked tirelessly for her clients. She rarely, if ever, took a day off. To her, helping families was not just a job—it was a calling.”

– Marshall Boyd (Partner)

“When Joan said, ‘I appreciate you,’ she meant it. One of her greatest gifts was her ability to encourage everyone around her.”

– Blake Barry (Agent and Grandson)

“I love Joan and her sweet spirit. When I started in the real estate business, I’d see Joan picking up her Open House signs, and I knew I wanted to work with her. For someone who had already achieved so much success to still be grinding out open houses and picking up her own signs—I knew she was the real deal. Sure enough, Joan brought me to Williams Trew, and I’ll forever be grateful to her.”

– Debbie Hunn

“All I can say is that if it weren’t for Marshall, Martha, and Joan giving this West Texas boy a chance, I wouldn’t have the beautiful life I’ve been fortunate to enjoy.”

– Whitney Neal

“Joan and I knew each other before our real estate careers. Her daughters and I carpooled in high school. Later, we worked together at William Rigg Real Estate. She was a force—she held herself and everyone else to high expectations. The word ‘no’ wasn’t in her vocabulary. She fiercely protected her clients.”

– Jo Ann Royer

“My favorite memory of Joan is riding in her car as a new agent. She’d point out nearly every house we passed, saying, ‘I sold that one.’ She was always encouraging, but if you had to negotiate against her, she was tough as nails.”

– Elizabeth McCoy

“Joan had an unwavering love for Fort Worth and reminded us daily how lucky we were to live in the best city in America, long before the rest of the country caught on. She had an unstoppable spirit and kind words for everyone, every single day. We were blessed to learn from one of the finest agents and teachers in the business.”

– Joseph Berkes

“Joan was one of the first agents I met at William Rigg. She was so focused, positive, and inspiring—a mentor and ultimate cheerleader in life. Knowing she’s with Jesus now brings a smile to my face and tears to my eyes.”

– Nancy Lohman

“Joan was integral to my success. Her kindness and mentorship during my four-year college internship laid the foundation for my career. Twenty-four years later, I wouldn’t be where I am without her.”

– Corrine Hyman Quast

“Joan taught me the importance of bringing people together. After just one conversation, she’d reach out to someone who could help, support, or make a connection. I carry that with me every day.”

– Dawn Tracy

“Her love for helping people was unmatched. Joan was generous, courageous, and an inspiration. I’m so thankful to have worked alongside her and even more blessed to call her my friend.”

– Patty Williamson
