Alaska Home Gives New Meaning to Rugged Indoor-Outdoor Living

An accurate description for the State of Alaska is rugged. The terrain is rugged. The people are rugged. The attitude is rugged. The fact that the state flag is not some big burly Alaskan swathed in red check flannel, chopping wood, is a shocker.

The only thing missing is the red checkered flannel shirt. Back to Alaska and its ruggedness.

This rugged attitude extends into all aspects in the state. Take, for instance, the handicap ramp we came across in Homer, Alaska. Before you got to the ramp anyone in a wheelchair would have to go across really soft sand. Assuming you do not sink, the ramp had slats of wood going across the ramp that would cause anyone in a wheelchair to go flying a la OJ Simpson in the movie The Naked Gun. The attitude is very much, “Ya gotta ramp. What’s the problem?”

The Naked Gun is one of the funniest movies ever made. I digress.

I give you all of this preface because the home featured in this week’s column is in Alaska and it is definitely for the most rugged humans amongst us. You really gotta see this house. Just sayin’.

This one-bedroom, one-bath, 800-square-foot home is located at 4409 Riverside Drive, Juneau, Alaska. The owners are asking $390,900. The home is sitting on .69 acre and as you can see in the photo above, it sits on a really pretty river. Perfect for the rugged outdoorsman.

The kitchen is a little odd in that all the counter space is next to the sink and there is none next to the stove. But there is a nice space for a kitchen table so you can look out the window and see the river.

It is a little odd to have your front door be a sliding glass door but they do things differently in Alaska. The flooring is really nice.

For 800 square feet there is some good storage. That is a nice place to put your mukluks when you come back home. Now I know what you are thinking, “Mimi, none of this seems really rugged. What the what?”

I got you. Here comes the rugged part of the house.

What? What is the problem? You still have a kitchen and a bathroom.

How is that for rugged? For almost $400K you can have riverfront property and property in the river. This gives new meaning to indoor-outdoor living. You should know that I am cry-laughing right now because I thought that was really, really funny.

Yes, I do Oprah. Yes, I do.

I didn’t see ANY mention of that catastrophe in the actual listing. Do they think no one’s going to notice? Very strange … but, Alaska, I guess. Thanks for your always entertaining profiles.

I noticed that as well. Perhaps they are hoping no one looks behind the sheet in what’s left of the house. Crazy. Thanks for the read. Have a great week.
