Podcast: True Crime Junkies, This One Is For You

Consider this Dallas Dirt Murder Homes: the advanced listener’s edition. On the latest episode of Dallas Dirt, guest host Shelby Skrhak (that’s me) sat down with the hosts of the Crime Estate podcast, Realtors Heather Guild and Elena Richey, to discuss the oft-overlooked, real estate details of some of the most famous murder homes.

But it’s a topic that’s not everybody’s cup of tea.

“If you are uninitiated or maybe you’re just not expecting it, when someone starts whipping out stories of autopsy reports and such, there can be some shock,” I warned listeners on the episode. And judging by my mother’s reaction to listening to the episode, I was right. From the moment our guest Heather said her husband was raised in an Iowa home where an entire family was murdered, she visibly shuddered.

But that was the precipice of Heather and Elena’s podcast, Crime Estate, and how the two Dallas Realtors came to discuss the impact that violent crime has on a home. These “murder homes” are called stigmatized properties and they’re a club that no Realtor wants their listing to be a part of.

On the episode, we dive into some of the most notorious murder homes, including the Darlie Routier home, the Candy Montgomery’s Wylie ax murder, and the 1993 JonBenét Ramsey unsolved murder in Colorado.

Now, I’ll be honest and say we as a podcast team didn’t know how much detail of the murdered child beauty queen we should go into.

It’s been 30 years since the salacious crime that rocked how we looked at true crime coverage, so it’s practically in public domain, but still — we’re talking about a child death. But it’s an unsolved murder that shouldn’t be forgotten.

So, for the podcast’s wide release we took out many extra details that helped paint the picture of this murder home, but wouldn’t make sense to someone who wasn’t already familiar with the case.

In this CandysDirt.com extra, here’s the missing footage in which we narrate what was happening that Dec. 26 morning of JonBenet’s death and show listing photos and a few crime photos of the Boulder home.
