Forget The Popcorn, But Let’s Dance on The Ceiling With These Fabulous Open Houses

Open House Designer Ceiling

Oh, what a feeling,
When we’re dancing on the ceiling …

Lionel Richie, Dancing on the Ceiling

So we’re not exactly dancing on ceilings, but ceilings will not be ignored. We’re way past the popcorn ceilings, those thick, bumpy, and sometimes even sparkly ceiling textures so popular from the 1950s to the ‘80s. Also known as “cottage cheese” or “acoustic ceilings,” they were created to quiet the noise. Supposedly New Yorker Francis J. Greenburger invented a spray-on mix for ceilings, winning him awards for this work.

Fast forward. We no longer want those ceilings. God bless all the people who hand-scraped that junk off their houses lest they be embarrassed by their oh-so-dated appearance, but we digress. Instead of popcorn, ceilings increasingly are design elements in a home. Feature walls? Fine, but feature ceilings just could be the new home décor frontier. If you’re ready for a house that not only has great floors, … and a ceiling worthy of an upward gaze or two, check out this week’s open houses.

3808 Beechwood Lane, Dallas

We’ve heard of feature walls, so check out this feature ceiling. An ice-blue ceiling adorns the ceiling in the primary bedroom in the spectacular home at 3808 Beechwood Lane. Jaw-dropping. “The primary is beautiful with that ceiling painted blue and the chandelier,” said agent Esther Ferre about this home staged by George Bass.

Immediately commanding attention, the ceiling just sets the tone for the entire suite. A groin vault ceiling is formed by two barrel vaults that intersect at right angles. Four curving surfaces dramatically draw the eye upward and toward the center. Who doesn’t want one of those?

A chandelier adorns the groin ceiling of the first-floor primary bedroom.

Built in 2023 on a corner lot in Dallas’ Midway Hollow neighborhood, the house has a lot to offer, in addition to a glorious ceiling. Situated on the first floor are a large living area, gourmet kitchen, office and primary suite with a luxurious bathroom. Upstairs are three bedrooms, three baths, a game room, and a media area.

The fireplace serves as the focal point of the living room, which opens up to the kitchen on the first floor.
The welcoming entryway to the home echos the curved doorways found inside the home.

This light, bright home with mature live oaks, four bedrooms and five bathrooms. “It’s very nicely done,” Ferre said. “It’s one the best finish-outs in Midway Hollow.” It’s on the market for $2,399,000.

Agents Esther Ferre and Nancy Geter with Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate will hold this home open 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 6, and May 13.

5628 Anita St., Dallas

This Tudor-style house may have been built in 1930, but the ceiling screams 2023.

A great ceiling keeps things looking up in this Greenville Ave.-area home.

Look up and admire the ceilings painted cafe-au-lait which make the contrasting white beams pop in geometric shapes. Below the spectacular ceiling is the living room featuring a fireplace and arched doorways.

Also downstairs is a guest bedroom and bathroom, while the primary bedroom suite is located upstairs with two closets. The home offers a total of four bedrooms and three baths, two living rooms and two dining areas. Guest quarters, complete with a kitchenette, are located above the garage.

Inside this charming Tudor-style home is an eye-catching ceiling.

Priced at $925,000, the home spans 2,856 square feet. It’s located in the Lower Greenville area of east Dallas, near some of the city’s best restaurants and shopping.

7733 Southwestern Blvd., Dallas

This 4,592-square-foot home has a lot to see, but don’t forget to look up at the ceilings.

Built in 1978, this house was updated in a lighter, brighter way, and the ceilings were not overlooked. The walls may have been painted white, but the living room’s vaulted ceiling allows the darker trim to pop in above the corner fireplace. It’s Texas, so there are ceiling fans you don’t need to see but surely will feel during our hotter-than-hot summers.

The living room’s wood-trimmed ceilings tie in with the warm wood floors.
Track lighting and a ceiling fan hover above this spacious and light-filled office.
A vaulted ceiling with a wood design is not to be missed in this living room.

There’s more to this house, though. Parquet floors lead through the house with an easy, open floor plan. The updated white kitchen features quartzite counters and great storage. With five bedrooms and four baths, the home offers dining areas from casual to formal to outdoors. The primary bedroom opens to the relaxing patio and pool area. The staircase leads to yet another living area, two more bedrooms and even a kitchenette.

Priced at $2.3 million, this residence offers 4,592 square feet of living on a stately, treed lot.

This home, listed by Jean Bateman with Allie Beth Allman & Associates, will be held open from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
