Dallas has plenty of high-profile streets full of luxury homes. However, when you want privacy, land, views, and proximity to downtown Dallas, only one street checks all the boxes.

You want to be on West Lawther Drive.

Homes in this exclusive and somewhat secluded area on East Dallas’ White Rock Lake don’t come up for sale very often. For instance, the iconic 1929 estate we all know as Mount Vernon has only had two owners. Lake living takes on new meaning on Lawther Drive because this is the one place in Dallas you genuinely have a sanctuary (no doubt why Erykah Badu lives here). So, it’s always exciting when a home on West Lawther Drive hits the market.

The property was originally owned by prominent neurosurgeon Jack Woolf and his wife, Orien. In 1951 they hired architect Howard Meyer, who designed a magnificent Georgian estate at 4321 W. Lawther in 1939.

In residential work, Meyer was better known for his smaller, more modern homes and his blending of the International Style with Frank Lloyd Wright’s organic architectural style. His collaboration with William W. Wurstler on Temple Emanu-El is an excellent example of his modern work, but he also designed the legendary Turtle Creek high-rise at 3525 Turtle Creek.

When the property was purchased in 2012, most of the house was demolished, but the owner paid homage to Meyer by keeping the rock portion of the facade and incredible Terrazzo flooring in the entryway.

I think Meyer would have understood and been pleased that some of the original home was blended into the new. I think he would also have been thrilled that the new owner chose Maestri Studio to make their vision a reality, adding a significant modern masterpiece to Lawther Drive.

Spectacular Views of White Rock Lake

Rosewood Custom Builders built the 9,140-square-foot, five-bedroom home. You can see from the photos there is beauty to spare, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering spectacular views of White Rock Lake, but there are also practical features. The basement, for instance, features a separate entrance, an enormous home theater, and game room, a laundry, and two wine cellars. What a great spot to ride out a tornado!

The past few years have shown us that luxury buyers want more than a beautiful home. They want compounds that provide every amenity imaginable, and this West Lawther Drive estate does not disappoint on any level.

The home is the jewel in the center of this luxury compound, sitting on 3.62 acres with an eight-car, air-conditioned garage and a large cabana overlooking the pool and lake. The estate also features a separate guest house, a 622-square-foot workshop, and stables for three horses.
