If you’re at this intersection of Custer Road and the Sam Rayburn Tollway, you’re safe, according to a SmartAsset analysis (Google Maps)

What’s the safest place in the United States?

Without question, it’s where Custer Road and the Sam Rayburn Tollway cross paths. On the east side of Custer Road is McKinney, on the west side is Frisco, and across the Tollway going south, on the east side of Custer Road is Plano.

It’s the epicenter where, according to SmartAsset, three of the nine safest cities in the U.S. converge. Frisco ranks first, McKinney second, and Plano ninth in SmartAsset’s analysis.

People shopping at the Wal-Mart SuperCenter in Frisco and the Target in McKinney along Custer Road should feel super safe. And what a selling point: Real estate agents and chambers of commerce will love this study to promote the area for potential homebuyers.

The report compared 200 U.S. cities to find the safest. SmartAsset, a New York-based financial technology company, considered violent crime, property, vehicular mortality, and drug poisoning mortality rates, and the percentage of the population engaging in excessive drinking.

Eight of the 10 safest cities are in Texas and California.

Last year, Frisco, McKinney, and Plano ranked second, third, and fifth, respectively. Sunnyvale, Calif., was top-ranked. In 2019, Frisco and McKinney were second and third.

Here’s how the report sized up the three Collin County cities:

  • Frisco had the fifth-lowest violent crime rate in the study with 86 violent crimes reported per 100,000 residents. Frisco also had the sixth-lowest property crime rate (972 crimes per 100K residents), and the sixth-lowest drug-poisoning mortality rate (73 deaths per 100K).
  • McKinney had the fourth-lowest property crime rate in the study, registering 936 crimes reported per 100K residents.
  • Plano had 155 violent crimes and 1,645 property crimes per 100K residents.
  • Frisco also was ranked fourth and Plano fifth in most-affordable safe cities.

Report review: SmartAsset has fascinating studies. All of its results are in chart form and broken down in easy-to-read text. It’s not fancy, but it’s worth a read. 🐇
