So Much To Love in This Hamilton Avenue Hacienda

Texas gained its independence more than 175 years ago, but the influence of its Spanish roots still captures our romantic imagination and inspires architectural tributes to that past. I have, from childhood, been enamored of the idiom and after many years have finally fetched a Texas Spanish style abode of my own.

This hacienda at 3625 Hamilton Avenue in Fort Worth was built just 100 years after independence in the Centennial year of 1936 and is listed in the Tarrant County Historic Resources Survey. The three-bedroom, three-bath house is in the heart of one of our favorite Westside neighborhoods — on a corner in Monticello, convenient to museums and 7th Street restaurants and watering holes.

From the meandering masonry walkway, the exterior possesses a beguiling simplicity. A covered porch is supported by rustic wooden piers. The rusticated wood reappears in the exposed window lintels buried in white stucco walls. The roof is comprised of classic red terracotta tiles.

The one-story house contains over 3,000 square feet of living space, consisting of pleasingly proportioned spaces that ramble agreeably over multiple levels, replete with countless decorative details. The rather imposing living room is dominated by a commanding chimneypiece with period Batchelder tiles, which also form the mantel. The fireplace terminates in a folk art crown of clerical design with crosses, which makes one think of a New Mexican church vestry. The dramatic vaulted ceiling is supported by forceful wood beams. The end of the room is punctuated by an arched stained glass window.

The formal dining room is accessed through an arched opening with the kitchen beyond. The kitchen may not look “on trend,” but it doesn’t lack charm. Hand painted tile, Portuguese, I’m guessing, comprise the counter and backsplash. The range cooktop is electric though the kitchen is plumbed for gas. Floors are time honored Saltillo tile.

The den is dominated by its impressive king post beam ceiling and has the second of two fireplaces — this one with a rustic rock surround. The paneled walls contain built-in shelves and cabinetry. Another charming step down area is called the “garden room” which, I believe, reprises the Saltillo tiles of the kitchen. A passageway beyond leads to the bedrooms.

Each of the three bedrooms has an attached bath. The principle bedroom suite has a spacious five piece bath with double sinks and shower stall. The combination of claw-footed tub on Saltillo is irresistible in a San Miguel D’Allende sort of way. Theme-consistent wrought iron framed mirrors complete the picture.

One might think one was in San Miguel or some other dreamy destination in the back garden which is just a touch romantically untended. There is a “casita” at back which has an additional 180 square feet not included in the listing count, as well as two covered parking spaces.
