CandysDirt.com Wins Preservation Education Award From Preservation Dallas

Back in the summer of 2019, columnist Karen Eubank and I mused on just how many historic homes Dallas has. We could, Karen had suggested, feature one a week.

As anyone knows, if you share an idea with me that sounds promising, I’m going to take you up on that. We’re now almost two years into producing Karen’s weekly Historic Preservation column and it has become so much more than just featuring a historic home every week. We’ve explored at-risk architecture, historic black neighborhoods under threat, and we’ve featured the people who have poured their lives (and their money) into Dallas’ history.

This column, in my eyes, has been a success. Why am I so certain? Because Karen’s work was instrumental in CandysDirt.com scoring the Preservation Education Award from Preservation Dallas.

Karen Eubank and her two hounds

Karen’s passion for historic homes and our city’s built history is fervent. She has lived in the historic conservation district of Hollywood Heights for years, and she’s active enough to get sucked into helping write and produce the annual home tour’s brochure. Karen is curious and relentless in her drive to dig deeper into our city’s architectural past, and her work has a loyal following.

Obviously, we’re overjoyed with the news that CandysDirt.com’s work has netted us another award, but we’ll give the floor to Preservation Dallas executive director David Preziosi so he can gush about us:

“The Preservation Education Award from Preservation Dallas recognizes a person or organization that produces a publication or media which helps to educate the general public about the value of historic preservation or the preservation of historic resources in Dallas. Past recipients of the Education Award have included the Finding Little Egypt Project of Richland Community College, Paula Bosse for Flashback Dallas, the National Trust for Historic Preservation for the Federal Historic Tax Credit Report for Texas, filmmaker Mark Birnbaum for his documentation of historic preservation projects, the Urban Armadillos group for their work on the Pegasus Urban Trails mobile app, and the City of Garland for their Garland Residential Idea Book.

Preservation Dallas is excited to recognize CandysDirt.com for their wonderful inclusion of historic preservation and historic houses as part of their incredibly successful and fun-to-read real estate website. They regularly feature stories about historic properties for sale in Dallas and the Park Cities showcasing that historic houses can be charming and obtainable places to live.

We also thank Karen Eubank for her dedication to her regular weekly posts on historic preservation. Her writing has helped educate the public about the value of historic properties and how they add to the wonderful quality of life in our unique neighborhoods around the city. CandysDirt.com is a true supporter of preservation in Dallas and the Park Cities and we applaud them for their incredible work in raising awareness about historic architecture and the importance of preserving it for the future.”
