These Home Inspection Head-Scratchers Are Things That Make You Go ‘Hmmm’

In the wonderful world of home inspection we learn to expect the unexpected, but some days we come across things that would make anyone wonder, “What were they thinking?” This week I’ve collected a few of these home inspection head-scratchers for you to ponder along with us.

People Used To Be Smaller?

This historic home featured a crawl space entrance that was approximately 12″ x 12.” No problem if you’re sending the kids down there to check things out, but many average-sized adults would struggle to get in there. Another inspector suggested he “Superman” his way in: point your toes, one arm up, one arm down and shoot in!

Death Trap Attic Hatch

The people who installed this attic hatch clearly had unnaturally long arms and weren’t afraid of heights. They also weren’t particularly safety-conscious.

Or in any case, your downspout should be pointed, well, down. And toward that handy gutter that is meant to direct it to the ground, instead of toward the shingles and back into the house. What were they thinking? In this case, I’m guessing they weren’t.

I hope I’ve given you some food for thought, and an opportunity to look around your house for things that don’t make sense. Are you, for example, using tape to solve a home repair issue? You might be a subject for future home inspection head-scratchers. As always, if you have seasonal home maintenance issues, or need a home inspection on a home you’d like to purchase, you know who to call!
