Proposed Oakland A’s stadium. Source: Bjarke Ingels Group

I was in Silicon Valley last week while plans for the new Oakland A’s ballpark were revealed. Between the numbers and images flying around, I got to thinking about Rangers’ stadium taking shape in Arlington.

I’ll stop right here and say that the last baseball game I attended was a Chicago Cubs’ game (against lord knows who) in the late 1980s (I was a plus-one good friend). I’ve never cared for sports or the foam-fingered, face-painted, booze-sopped civic pride they engender.  So please don’t take this column as some sort of shot at baseball – this is about creating useful architecture.

First, it’s interesting that the in-person audience for professional baseball appears to be shrinking. Ranger’s Stadium is slimming from 48,114 seats to an estimated ~42,000. The Oakland A’s are also proposing a smaller, 34,000-seat stadium – their current digs seat 63,000 and were shared with the departing Oakland Raiders.

The Terrace is likely the last place in the Downtown Dallas area where you can find great deals, and this penthouse-level unit at 2323 N. Houston St. is not only a bargain, but it comes with a little extra celebrity cachet.
Jason Botts2
Unit 706, a one-bedroom, one-bathroom with study condo inside The Terrace, is being sold by none other than former Rangers first baseman and outfielder Jason Botts. Botts, a switch-hitter who was on the Rangers roster from 2005 to 2008, played in 93 games over four seasons with five home runs.
His condo, a tidy seventh-floor unit, is listed by Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty agent Alison Houpt Howell for $315,000. The unit, which totals 988 square feet, has some great views, a fabulous amenity deck, a neutral color scheme, designer lighting, concierge service, and two assigned garage spaces. It’s the perfect lock-and-leave, low-maintenance unit for those who travel.

“The Terrace is one of the best opportunities to purchase in Victory Park,” Howell said. “With low HOA’s, stellar management, privacy, a great fitness center, and high-end finish-out it’s no wonder Jason Botts called The Terrace home while playing for the Rangers.”

As former Rangers announcer Mark Holtz once announced at the beginning of every Rangers game: “It’s baseball time in Texas!”

Yes, today is opening day for your Texas Rangers, who meet the Seattle Mariners at 3:05 p.m. today at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. It’s the first of 162 games for our home team, and considering that half of those games will be played just off Interstate 30 with no mass transit to or from the ballpark from Dallas, perhaps it’s time to start thinking about moving?

If you’re looking for a swanky estate from which you can jet over to the ballpark to put another mark in the win column without the horrendous commute to Arlington, here are the seven most expensive properties from which you can choose:

4311 Brookview Beltre House

Aidrian Beltre’s Bowling Greenwood home. (Photo: Google Maps)

Of all the things to take from Adrian Beltre’s Bowling Greenwood mansion, the burglars who burgled the Rangers third-baseman’s home took tickets to his Globe Life Ballpark suite and his American League Championship ring according to this SportsDay post.

No untraceable electronics. No silver. No artwork. And no one was caught.

Sounds kind of personal, doesn’t it?

According to City of Dallas police reports, Beltre’s home was burglarized last Thursday morning shortly after he left for the Rangers’ homestand finale against Oakland. Nobody was in the house at the time. Beltre’s family is still in Southern California.

The police report cites the theft of precious metals and jewelry. Beltre, who only briefly returned home before the Rangers’ flight to Toronto last Thursday evening, said among the items taken was his 2011 AL Championship ring. Beltre also said the thieves made off with tickets to his suite at Globe Life Park in Arlington.

“I’d like to see them show up there,” Beltre said. “I’m just glad nobody was home.”

I am truly baffled by this break-in, not just because of the items taken from Beltre’s stone-clad two-story at 4311 Brookview Drive, but over how someone could get away with such a crime. This area has so very little crime thanks to the off-duty Dallas Police patrols in the area and the overall watchfulness of neighbors, so I have to wonder if this doesn’t send some homeowners scrambling to update their security systems. Some say biometric security is becoming more common …

Adrian and Sandra Beltre’s 8,204-square-foot home has five bedrooms, five full and two half baths, three fireplaces, and a backyard pool all on a 3/4 of an acre. DCAD says it’s worth more than $3 million.

French-Inspired Chateau in Guarded, Gated Neighborhood Seeks a N

One of my favorite mid-cities agents, Kimdolyn Smith with Webb-Barton, has a fabulous chateau on the market in the sports capital of North Texas: Arlington!

We’ve seen some great homes in this area owned by professional athletes who need a place to relax during a hectic season. This “hidden jewel,” as Smith calls it, has incredible interiors and luxurious outdoor spaces, too, with tons of spots from which you can watch the big game. Jump to see it all!

5038 Deloache longshotDo you think they just want to be near Yu Darvish? Pro baseball infielder Michael Young — former, that is, I think — and his wife, Christina Barbosa, have purchased a massive, stately grand house on the fabulous street of Deloache, the same street as Mark Cuban’s humble abode. Yes, THAT Deloache,  in Sunnybrook Estates, Preston Hollow. (more…)

2006 Brazos exteriorWe are sure sorry that the New Orleans Saints won’t be slugging it out at the Superbowl in (freezing!) New York this year. But mark my word, buyers will be slugging it out to own the Westlake, Texas home of their coach, Sean Payton, and his estranged wife, Beth. 5006 Brazos just hit the market for an amazing $3,450,000. That is really not all that much for the stunning, huge, LOADED, estate nestled in the chi chi Vaquero Golf Club, on a Cul-du-sac lot with enormous trees. The home sports a more contemporary flare than most of the homes in the seriously gated, private community, with large windows, expansive views and something every parent of teenagers needs: a discotheque!

2006-Brazos-WestlakeYou may recall… back in February 2011 — Sean Payton got everyone all flustered thinking he was maybe trying to get closer to Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys by moving to Vaquero Club in Westake. Vaquero is the number one home  to many PGA golfers, current and former Texas Rangers players and other celebrities and players. Payton, his wife Beth, and kiddos first hunkered down in the 8,554 square foot house owned by former Texas Rangers and current New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira. Come early January, 2012, Sean and his wife bought 5006 Brazos. Smart move as this house had so many goodies, and what it didn’t have they added, from the private disco to the massive fireplace in the master bath, to the ladies’ vanity station with farmhouse sink that puts you in command central for grooming.

No offense to NOLA, but you would not find a house like this in Louisiana. No way Jose. Check out this slide show for detailed photos from the home’s last listing.

But now, Sean and Beth are calling it quits. And 5006 Brazos Court, their dream house,  is about to become someone else’s dream.

sean-and-beth-300x193The home is nestled into a cozy Vaquero cul de sac overlooking a pond. The kids can go fish whenever. The home has almost 7800 square feet. If you love those big, sprawling Farmer’s sinks, you have found your nirvana. Every single bathroom in this house has Farmer’s sinks that you usually only see in kitchens. Take note of the Master bath in that slide show: most gorgeous tile ever plus steam shower and a romantic rock fireplace. This home is loaded with interesting textures in every single room.

There are stained concrete floors and walls, as well as a heavy use of wood paneling, marble and stone. Let me tell you: no expense was spared in the amenity department when this home was built. The place comes with a to-die for gourmet kitchen, a media room, an exercise room and a study. Biggest butler’s pantry I have seen. There is a second game room upstairs, with the now-famous disco off to the side. And when we say disco, we mean disco: Payton’s in-house game room, which goes full-on discotheque has a lighted dance floor, laser lights, fog machine and a full wet bar.Sean-Payton-House-Westlake-Texas-25

Behind the pool is a full cabana, recessed into the terrain so it’s a swim-up bar.

Many expected the home to hit the market in 2012 after Payton filed for divorce from his wife of 20 years. However, Beth later filed a counter-petition for divorce that allowed her to designate the Westlake home as the primary residence of the couple’s children.

Payton was an assistant coach for the Dallas Cowboys from 2003-05, where he must have developed his great taste in real estate. This is one of my favorite homes in North Texas, and I am totally stealing that master bath fireplace idea. Talk about warm towels! Also loving everything in their son’s room, from the footballs to the playing field rug boasting loudly, SAINTS! That’s a boys’ dream room, whether he’s 9 or 49!
