We see a lot of homes here at CandysDirt.com — in fact, I sometimes think we have seen every home in North Texas and then some!

We love historic homes especially, too, but we are prissy about wanting everything brand spanking new inside. And to be honest, the two do not often mix. We see these gorgeous relics — Tudors, Colonials, Prairie-style — and then we get all excited, walk in, and the innards are just not up to the innards of a brand-new build.

But then I saw 6629 Gaston.

At first, I thought this was a new home. But no, no, no — the home was built in 1929. In 2008, the owners embarked on one of those “take it to the studs” type remodels, completely changing the interiors, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, expanding a bit, and bringing in crucial updates. Additional improvements were made in 2018, including a restored slate roof. But every charming, aesthetic and architectural element worth saving from the original home was saved and cherished. So the home has wonderful formals, as homes back then did, but also a modern, open floor plan (great for entertaining) in the more casual living areas. And yes, original glass doorknobs… (more…)

 

PeninsulaIt is no secret we are in love with The Peninsula, a small finger of East Dallas dirt that stretches around White Rock Lake’s eastern shore just off Buckner Boulevard. We write about almost every home that hits the market there for several reasons: It’s so hot, properties barely last on the market.

In fact, you almost have to snap them up as a hip pocket, they go so fast.

The area is huge with downsizing Baby Boomers who just want to be at the lake without the driving. In fact, we know several residents on The Peninsula who have left the Park Cities and North Dallas to be here.

And the area is huge with young families who want to raise their kiddos in a nature preserve as much as possible.

And this home is one of the best.

First of all, location and VIEW!  Most Peninsula homes build a second story look-out porch to see the lake.

In this home located at 9431 Waterview Road, you see the lake from your back-yard. There is backyard gate access to the jogging-bike trail that zig-zags across the shore. Or you can carry your kayak to the water’s edge and paddle in. Who wouldn’t want to be able to do a little sailing every single day?

I cannot tell you when I started my love affair with Tudor-style homes. I think it began in my childhood, being raised in the outer fringes of Chicago. I think anyone raised in the Chicago area, like our columnist Jon Anderson and myself, have an extra appreciation for beautiful architecture because there is just so much of it in that strong-shouldered city. For me, it was driving the North Shore suburbs flocking out from Evanston that made me think English Tudor homes were the warmest, prettiest, most inviting structures of all to call home.

Then I became an English major, and the relationship was sealed.

Our Inwood Home of the Week is a seriously updated English Tudor home at 5210 Denton Drive in the hot, hot neighborhood of Oak Lawn Heights, south of Cedar Springs, north of Maple. Some also call the area Maple Springs.

Very convenient to the Medical District, the area is popular with interns, physicians and anyone who works in the mammoth (and still growing) U.T. Southwestern Medical Center complex clustered around Harry Hines Boulevard and Inwood Road. Trust me: you can bike to work.

I will never forget the time I first looked at homes in this part of town, Midway Hollow, on Van Ness Lane, to be exact.

A Realtor told me that this was the kind of neighborhood where you come outside and see the elves dancing with little stars all around. This was in 1980 and I was in my early 20s, new to Dallas, and house hunting.

I had to agree with her: Midway Hollow was idyllic then, as it is now.

To put a more modern spin on it, the neighborhood around 3719 Van Ness is almost a replica of Ponyland, or maybe Paradise Estate. Any minute I expect to see Twilight Sparkle, Spike, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Applejack, and Fluttershy frolicking in the green grass.

This wonderful neighborhood has cradled this brick home since 1952, elves, ponies, and people. (more…)

Look at this charming, neat-as-a-pin, well-decorated, freshly painted three-bedroom and two-refinished-baths ranch in Northwest Dallas. I know what you will think: God that’s adorable! We once lived in Northwest Dallas!

Our very first home in Dallas was at 3550 Ainsworth, north of Royal, but same wonderful quadrant of town. We moved in fresh from New York City (after a very short stint in an Oak Lawn apartment with aluminum wiring!) and dinner was served, courtesy of our neighbors, who still live next door to that Ainsworth house this day! I was blown away by the neighborhood kindness: dinners, cocktails, wine, party invitations, warmth. And when the time came for a poor, medical-school-debt-burdened OB resident’s family to have their first child, a crib was given to us by one neighbor, freshly re-painted by another. There were plenty of moms to offer parenting advice when the ‘rents and in-laws were 1,200 miles away!

I tell you this because 3480 Timberview, listed for $335,000 (reduced from $350,000) has this same spirit and is so much more than cute photos (with a cute agent, Rustin James.)

What a way to start Valentine’s Day! Our Inwood Home of the Week is a Tealwood Square townhouse that is in the heart of everything, yet so secluded you’ll have all the tranquility you desire.

Builder Jim Williams completed this Tealwood Square townhouse at 8849 McCraw Drive in 1969. Williams is known not only for Tealwood Square, but also for his work in Caruth Homeplace and Briarwood.

So, where is Tealwood Square? It’s next door to Bluffview and about a minute from the Dallas North Tollway. It’s a private enclave of Devonshire.But you would be hard-pressed to find it without a Realtor. And that Realtor should be Dave Perry-Miller listing agent Tricia Weiner because, you guessed it, this Tealwood Square townhouse is her home!

Historic Lakewood Tudor

Oh, my goodness. This is exactly the sort of story I love, so grab that large cup of java and settle in because I have a tale to tell about a thoroughly modern update to a historic Lakewood Tudor.

If you have ever longed for a classic historic home, but just could not bear the thought of figuring out who to call, or enduring a remodel, have I got a house for you! Our Inwood Home of the Week is a historic Lakewood Tudor at 6627 Lakewood Boulevard. This beauty was built in 1925 and is within walking distance to Whole Foods and the Lakewood Country Club.

This three-story historic Lakewood Tudor was completely redesigned and rebuilt by Kienast Homes. Truth be told, when I spotted this interesting marriage of vintage and modern styles, I had a hard time wrapping my head around the whole concept. But I kept coming back to this house because it had all the exterior elements I love. In fact, I was trying to figure out what had been added or changed on the façade. Guess what? Other than painting, and changing the front door, absolutely nothing was done.

The interior is another story.
