Realtors, Take the Preservation Dallas Historic House Specialist Seminar

The pace at which we have seen demolitions of important historic buildings and residences that helped to define our city is concerning. There is no better way for Realtors to help their buyers and sellers understand the value of our built heritage than to take part in the Historic House Specialist Seminar offered by Preservation Dallas on Jan. 28 and 29.

Don’t let the word seminar intimidate you. This is an engaging and interactive learning experience, led by local professionals who are passionate about preserving our city’s history. And it’s not just informative, it’s also fun. I can vouch for that, having personally taken part in it a few years ago.

The MetroTex Association of Realtors and Preservation Dallas will collaborate twice this year on the two-day Historic House Specialist Seminar. Realtors receive a certification and 8 CE credits. Although the class offers information targeted to real estate professionals, it’s a seminar everyone should take to learn more about Dallas. Appraisers should specifically make the time to attend because it’s impossible to assess the value of a historic home without the knowledge offered in the Historic House Specialist Seminar.

Having lived in a conservation district for decades, I’ve seen the outcome of uninformed Realtors selling homes here. It just takes one new neighborhood painting their 1920s Tudor seafoam green to start a Nextdoor comment riot! That actually happened in Hollywood Heights, and the new owners were not happy that their Realtor neglected to pass on the information about the restrictions on paint colors in conservation districts.

The Historic House Specialist Seminar is designed to provide Realtors with the tools necessary to market Dallas’ older properties.

“Our 2025 goal is a commitment to education,” Preservation Dallas Executive Director Sarah Crain said. “Realtors are our first line of communication and education when it comes to homeowners and home sales, and we value them. We want to give them the best possible resources. This year, we are returning to our roots and bringing back iconic speakers like former Preservation Dallas president Katherine Seale and Landmark Commissioner and Preservation consultant Jim Anderson.”
