You Might Say H-E-B Grocery Avoided an Identity Crisis in Northeast Tarrant County

The mayors of both Bedford and Euless, along with store officials, participated in last week’s H-E-B Mid Cities groundbreaking.

H-E-Bs in HEB can be confusing.

Yes, the triple suburbs of Hurst, Euless, and Bedford are often known as simply “HEB.” But the acronym is tossed around in multiple ways, with only context clues revealing which HEB to which one might be referring.

Such as HEB — Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District. Or HEB — Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Hurst-Euless-Bedford. Or HEB—Hurst-Euless-Bedford Chamber of Commerce.

So, when H-E-B, the beloved grocery company, chose a name for its new store stretching across both Bedford and Euless, calling that site HEB H-E-B was out of the question.

H-E-B Mid Cities was revealed as the chosen moniker for the newest store during Thursday’s groundbreaking of that newly named store.

Finally, a Groundbreaking

“H-E-B is finally coming to HEB,” said Bedford Mayor Dan Cogan during his remarks at the groundbreaking. “Today is an exciting day for the Hurst, Euless, and Bedford area as we take the first step in welcoming H-E-B into our community.”

The groundbreaking was an official start for a business that had been planned and hoped for by many. Cogan said the grocery retailer’s Northeast Tarrant County site has kept the area abuzz. The opening of an H-E-B grocery is known for causing some excitement.

“I’m not kidding when I say that this store is the most anticipated retail opening in the history of the city, and we are so glad you’ve chosen our community,” the Bedford mayor said at the groundbreaking ceremony.

It’s a result of a collaborative agreement between the cities of Bedford and Euless, although in her remarks, Euless Mayor Linda Martin was quick to quip that 70 percent of the store will be found in Euless. The cooperative details have been in discussion since 2015, she said.

“Since the property lies within both Euless and Bedford, we recognized that the process could be elongated by HEB having to coordinate with two cities,” Martin said. ” Our primary goal was to ensure that if indeed, we were blessed to receive a store we would do all we could to ensure a seamless and effortless way to facilitate a smooth development process for HEB.”

Plans for Two in North Texas

This Northeast Tarrant County location will be built on the northwest corner of Cheek-Sparger Road and Rio Grande Boulevard. This location’s design calls for it to be a 126,000-square-feet store.

There’s no name game with the H-E-B Grocery Company in the Collin County suburb of Murphy, which also broke ground last week. The Murphy store, planned to be 122,000 square feet, will be at Farm Road 544 and McCreary Road.

Both new stores will be full-service H-E-B stores, with an H-E-B Pharmacy, True Texas BBQ restaurant, gas station, and car wash. The stores will be designed “to reflect the character unique to each community,” the company stated in a press release.

Just a Few Stores

H-E-B stores exist in North Texas, including in Plano, Allen, McKinney, Mansfield, Fort Worth, Frisco, and Prosper. Additional stores are also under construction in Rockwall and Irving.

Headquartered in San Antonio, the business began in 1905 when Florence Butt opened the C.C. Butt Grocery Store on the ground floor of the family home in Kerrville. The company now operates more than 300 stores throughout Texas. Within Texas and Mexico, H-E-B owns more than 435 stores and counts its sales at $43 billion.

The Mid-Cities and Murphy stores are expected to open in mid-2026.
