Why is the Midcentury Modern Ju-Nel so popular?
Well, the Midcentury Modern Ju-Nel is not just a rare find. It’s really a masterpiece. Architects Lyle Rowley and Jack Wilson launched their firm after working under Howard Meyer, one of the pioneers of modern architecture. In 1958, blending the names of their wives, June and Nelda, they started designing homes primarily in east and northeast Dallas. They loved a challenging lot, building around and among the trees.

There are hallmarks to any Midcentury Modern Ju-Nel, like exposed beams, brick paver flooring, high ceilings, and some very unique fireplaces. Outside, you generally find adobe brick and stone with low-pitched roof lines. Although Rowley and Wilson built for the average home buyer, they created some larger homes for well-known clients like the modeling maverick Kim Dawson and advertising legend Stan Richards.

It’s interesting to note the Ju-Nel homes have the same cachet and following as those of Charles Dilbeck. Like Dilbeck, this is largely due to the devotion of one man. The remaining Dilbecks were researched and cataloged by Willis Winters who helped to found the Dilbeck Architecture Conservancy and is presently writing a book on the architect. Mark Weeks has devoted almost two decades to researching Ju-Nel homes and we can safely say he is now the authority on the duo after launching his website ju-nel.com.

When Dave Perry Miller’s Amy Timmerman with the Bar Group told us this Midcentury Modern Ju-Nel was hitting the market, we knew it would resonate. This 1,868-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bathroom home, built in Lake Highlands in 1962, is a testament to the firm’s productivity at its peak.

The majority of Ju-Nel-designed homes are found in this area, with White Rock Valley being a particular hotspot. This home, with its open floor plan, walls of windows, and unique fireplace, is the epitome of the Ju-Nel design. The recently replaced roof and the period lighting added by the current owners add to its desirability.

Not only is this a super cool home, but it’s in a terrific location. Lake Highlands is such a family-oriented neighborhood. It’s highly sought-after because it offers a small-town feeling with excellent outdoor opportunities. There are great trails and parks, and you can be at White Rock Lake in minutes. Lake Highlands also offers some of the best schools in Dallas.

Timmerman has this Midcentury Modern Ju-Nel at 9735 Bellewood Drive available for $765,000. We encourage you to make a beeline to the open house on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and snag this one before it’s too late!
