Designer Michael Aiduss is based in New York City and Montclaire, N.J.

We can’t think of a designer who’s more well-known for invitingly beautiful, atmospheric spaces than Michael Aiduss. Based in New York City and Montclair, N.J., Michael’s show-stopping work was seen in the primary living space at the 2021 Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Dallas, where his salon on the ground floor featured influences from sophisticated, European country houses and showcased feelings of livability, comfort, and luxury that made guests feel right at home with its welcoming quality.

An industry leader and innovator, Michael’s work can be seen around the world, and his tireless commitment to interiors that are both bold and timeless allows him the ability to design bespoke interiors that reflect the narrative of each homeowner while simultaneously embracing the unique setting of each space. The result: interiors that effortlessly marry modernity and antiquity with a mindset of longevity.

We had the privilege of chatting with Michael to learn more about his design philosophy, his favorite home renovation projects, and what he likes best about working with clients in Texas.

How would you describe your design philosophy?

I love creating something wonderfully unexpected — and I believe that interiors should be both real and enchanting. Whether you’re in a large home or an apartment, the interiors should feel legitimate and incredibly smart. I strive to steer clear of norms, while also designing spaces intended for usability, livability, and comfort.

What inspired you to pursue a career in design?

I grew up in a family who enjoyed a professional and recreational pursuit of the arts. My dad was an architect and my mom to this day is an avid collector of beautiful antiques. For family outings, we frequently visited many of America’s great houses, from Mount Vernon to Monticello, where I began to observe — and fall in love with! — historical architecture, design, and the translation of European influences throughout interiors. My passion and focus never changed, and I’ve never looked back!

How do you advise your clients, especially new homeowners?

I love to help my clients as they navigate the market — it’s one of my favorite aspects of design. I feel that by lending my perspective about potential changes or additions to a property they’re considering lends a sense of clarity. With this knowledge, they’re able to consider not only the elements they need or want in a new home, but also gain a realistic vision about the aesthetic opportunities, too. I want to help my clients love their homes, and oftentimes, real estate shopping together is the best place to start!

What do you love about Dallas real estate and design?

The sense of style that people have in Dallas is unmistakable — it’s an irresistible combination of graciousness, friendliness, intelligence, and sophistication.

Everyone in Texas I meet — from my clients to industry peers — are such great people who really appreciate quality craftsmanship, high style, and fabulous entertaining. The way they love and care about their homes, from the interiors to gardens, is an extension of a deep appreciation for a graceful, gracious way of life. I love any reason to be surrounded by their hospitality. The possibilities of design in Texas are truly endless, thanks to the varied landscapes and cultural nuances found around the state.

Best advice for home renovation or design projects?

Aspirational image libraries are critical — I recommend that my own clients organize their “wish list” or “must-have” pictures by category, from kitchens to bedrooms, closets, or living rooms. Secondly, be realistic about your budget. As a designer, I want to help my clients achieve their goals for a space, and I want to ensure we make choices along the way to improve and complete a room as much as possible —rather than waiting a few years to furnish it!

What room is most important to start with during a renovation?

Always start with the kitchen — it’s truly the heart of the home. Whether you’re cooking or picking up takeout, everyone gathers for drinks and nibbles in the kitchen. I also encourage my clients to really focus on creating a beautiful living room that is actually enjoyed and frequently used for both family time and entertaining.

Can’t live without?

In my own home, I adore fresh flowers, the right background music for every occasion, and a signature, often seasonal, scent. These seemingly small elements are what make a house feel personal! I also love details that tell a meaningful story — for example, my favorite scent is Mediterraneo by Carthusia, which I discovered on a trip to Capri.
