Luxuriously Updated Highland Park Craftsman

Our Inwood National Bank Home of the Week is the most luxuriously updated Highland Park Craftsman I’ve ever seen. Not only has this 1921 home been meticulously remodeled, but it’s also been expanded in a smart way that keeps the architectural integrity intact.

When you think about a Craftsman home, you don’t generally think of finding one or even searching for one in the Park Cities. East Dallas and Oak Cliff spring to mind, but a Highland Park Craftsman home is not expected — not at all. I did a double take when I noticed the 3504 Harvard Avenue address. And another double take at the price tag of $1.999 million. That is until I saw all of the photos, and now the price seems like a bargain.Highland Park Craftsman

The home was expanded and updated in 2012. With 3,467 square feet, four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a guest quarters, it’s just the right size for a family. That’s welcome news for anyone scrambling to get into Highland Park ISD as we head into the new school year.

Although Craftsman-style homes are most certainly works of art, they were developed to be extremely functional, mainly due to America’s ever-changing lifestyles. As the days of large Victorian homes with servants and multiple levels faded away, new demands took hold.

Oddly enough, those early 20th century needs match those of today’s buyers. Building sites positioned to take advantage of sun exposure, use of local, natural materials, and open floor plans were all hallmarks of the 1920s Craftsman home. These features look a lot like a wish list you’d hand a builder today.

The beauty of remodeling an iconic style is you get the best of both worlds. This home could serve as the perfect template for anyone considering a Craftsman remodel.

When you tour the house, and you should, there are a few things I don’t want you to miss. Be sure to look for the hidden wine closet and sit down for a few minutes in the reading loft. It overlooks the magnificent pecan tree growing up through a large party deck. It’s a perfect year-round sanctuary.

The guest cottage was completed in 2015 and at 455 square feet, is another great addition to the property.

Arts &Crafts Style.com captured the essence of what it’s like to live in a Craftsman home.

“In the purest sense, they are family abodes artistically constructed by hand from natural materials with the purpose of creating a warm, welcoming, and peaceful home that has the power to nurture and sustain family, friends, and the community.”
