Winning one of the new legacy business awards from Preservation Dallas can be challenging because the full committee has to agree. But when Preservation Associate Palmer Bradshaw proposed the breakfast spot he’s been coming to since he was a child, there was simply no contest. Thanks to Bradshaw’s nomination, Kuby’s Sausage House and European Market is the hands-down winner.

A Link to a Family’s Past in University Park

Walking into Kuby’s in University Park’s Snider Plaza is like coming home. You’re embraced by the ambiance, enticed by the delicious aromas, and welcomed by smiling faces.

It’s a truly European market experience, with the finest selection of meats, cheeses, and Kuby’s famous homemade sausages. The array of condiments is dizzying, and don’t get me started on the chocolate.

They also offer wild game processing and, as Bradshaw will attest, serve the best German food in town at breakfast and lunch. If you need your holiday events catered, Kuby’s is the answer.

Kuby’s legacy extends beyond their years in Dallas. In 1728, Friedrich Kuby opened a neighborhood specialty sausage and meat market in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Two centuries later, Karl Kuby immigrated to the United States, opening Kuby’s Sausage House Inc. in Dallas in 1961.

Karl’s dream was to introduce Texas to the tradition and taste of the fine sausages and specialty meats that he enjoyed as a boy in Kaiserslautern.

Everyone Comes Back to Kuby’s

Karl Kuby Jr. continues the family legacy with recipes and meat preparation techniques that have been handed down for generations. He will tell you the best part of a family business is family.

“It really hit me when my son began working here,” Kuby said.” It made me realize how rare it was that I got to work with my dad almost every day until he retired.”

The other thing Kuby enjoys is the customers.

“One of the most rewarding things is to see the generational customers,” he said. “I remember people from when I was a kid. Everyone comes back.”

That’s because Kuby’s is not just a Dallas institution — it’s home.

The Preservation Dallas Awards will be presented at the Kalita Humphreys Theater on May 21. To showcase the home and promote the awards, the Bourn House will be open to the public on April 16th from 6-8 p.m.
