Jo vs Kylo Ren

I did my best to use the force against Kylo Ren.

Huge Star Wars nerd that I am, I went to the special screening of The Force Awakens hosted by Keith’s Comics at Studio Movie Grill. Let’s just say that, if you’re a fan of the force, you’ll love this film. Big props to J.J. Abrams for doing right by the franchise. Last night, however, was pretty dang magical as a bunch of cosplayers showed up and whipped Padawans, Jedi, and Sith of all ages into a frenzy over the film’s opening.

Afterward, I wanted to take that magic home with me, maybe to a house that felt straight out of Episode VII. So I rounded up a list of five homes in Dallas-Fort Worth where the force is particularly strong. See for yourself:

Leta Mae 1Recently I was asked my thoughts on a neighborhood changing its name. While that story is in production, I will say this: if ever there was a community that should change its name, that would be Farmers Branch.

Why? Because there are some gorgeous homes in Farmers Branch, very upscale, sleek and sophisticated, and the location is stellar: just north of the 635 Loop, convenient to 35E and DFW, especially now that 635 is nearing it’s 2000 year (or so it seemed) completion. I know I am risking the wrath of an entire community, a really great community, but I just have to apologize in advance and SAY IT. And it’s not just the recent negative publicity from that inane immigration ordinance attempt, it’s the tone and inference of the word “Farmer” that has been etched into us all since, well, The Farmer in the Dell:
farmer

I say try Ranchers Hollow, or Ranchers Branch. Or how about Farnsworth Branch, borrowing the name of a lovely rural road (probably not so rural anymore) in my native suburban Illinois?

Because look at this sizzling sustainable showplace at 2619 Leta Mae Lane that is for sale in FB and all she has to offer! (more…)

A couple of weeks ago I sat down with Dawn Reser Schaeffer to talk about Hexter Elementary and the White Rock Home Tour. Schaeffer, who has a daughter at the Blue Ribbon Elementary school off Peavy Road, is one of the home tour organizers for the 10th annual event. It’s a great, cost-effective fundraiser for the school, she said, because the community bands together to keep costs low, and there’s a great inventory of modern homes near the neighborhood school. Parents volunteer and contribute, and homeowners vie for spots on this highly anticipated home tour, one of the few that features modern architecture exclusively.

She could not be more right, especially considering that one much-talked-about home, PV14, will be on the tour and it’s just down Peavy from Hexter. The Lakewood/East Dallas Advocate did a great feature on the designer of the home, Michael Gooden in their recent home and design issue. You can see it on the tour, though, and help support a fantastic Dallas ISD campus. Other homes include an amazing Cliff Welch modern on East Lake Highlands that fuses masonry, wood, and glass seamlessly to provide a mid-century modern look in a new build. Parts of it have a very Tom Kundig-type feel with the exposed beam supporting the roof just outside the master bedroom.

Another home you don’t want to miss is a beautiful LEED Gold remodel of a near-teardown midcentury on Sylvania. This home was in awful shape, but D’J Perkinson of Studio Perk brought it back to life as one of the most eco-friendly homes in Dallas. It’s as easy on the eyes as it is on the earth!Jump for a sneak peek at these two homes, as well as more information on the tour and how you can win tickets!

We live for the AIA Dallas Tour of Homes, and the homes featured on this year’s tour do not disappoint. We’re talking about some of the most amazing modern homes and unbelieveable renovations by innovative architects across Dallas.

The is a home tour you don’t want to miss, either, and lucky for you, we’re giving away a pair of tickets to this amazing event. The tour, which runs this weekend, Nov. 2 and 3, is organized by the Dallas chapter of the American Institute of Architects. These are the homes that architects go gaga over, so expect clean lines, unique geometry and neutral palettes.

Of course, there are some incredible renovations, too, including 3615 Gillespie Street Unit C (below). Designed by Mitchell Garman architects, this condo is just gorgeous. Tons of wood offset with bright white paint and colorful accents make this unit a vision of Midcentury Modern revived.

GillespieUnitC

“The 1958-era condo has wonderful bones – full-height glass, but very private, small urban condo in the midst of the city,” said owner Kelly Mitchell. “We took out the walls around the kitchen to open it up and make it useful for the way we live today. The detailing and materials are modern, yet fitting for the era and style of the original building.”

There’s another unit in the building on the tour, too, and the take on the space is completely unique.

If you’re looking for an interesting play on lines, textures, and transparency, you will have to pick your jaw up from the floor after you’ve seen 21 Winding Lake Drive by Smitharc Architects (below). This home abounds with minimalist and Asian-style influences, with walls that create privacy without blocking light, not unlike a shoji screen.

Winding Lake

“The Winding Lake house is a study in contrasts: natural cedar cladding alongside crisply rendered stucco and glass, huge windows that provide amply shaded private views, sculptural forms that envelope rather than displace space, a sense of expansiveness despite its confined zero-lot-line site,” said Jason Smith, AIA, of Smitharc Architects.

Of course, these are only a couple of the 10 amazing homes on this year’s tour. Want to see them all? Comment below on which home is your favorite and then send an email with your contact information to jo@candysdirt.com. We’ll choose the winner tomorrow!

Tour some of the most MODERN homes in Dallas. From 11 am until 5 pm on Saturday, March 2, the second annual Dallas Modern Home Tour shows off cutting edge architectural wonders, sustainable building and materials, convertible indoor-outdoor spaces and even a koi pond.

Not just any old Modern home can swing it: architects, designers, builders and Realtors submit homes online for consideration, and a team of experts, including tour producers Matt Swinney and James Leasure, whittle down the selections to those that best represent modern living. Tickets are $30 in advance (by March 1, 8pm) or $40 the day of the tour. Children 12 and under get in free, though I cannot imagine bringing a child to a home tour. Not even mine!
