“We call it the TARDIS because it looks so small from the outside and everyone that steps in the front door says ‘WOW!’ ” seller Jodie Adams claims. She’s put her adorable Montebello Park home on the market with Realtor Bill Nelson. This home has so many cute features, including an upstairs addition that has dramatically increased the square-footage of this 1939 cottage inside the Stonewall Jackson Elementary attendance area.

And we have to agree about how much bigger it looks on the inside, especially with the open living room and spacious kitchen. Jump to see the photos!

We were saddened to hear that the developer of the transit-oriented development by which North Texas judges all other rail-adjacent construction, Mockingbird Station, has passed.

Ken Hughes was the brains behind the mixed-use project that was anchored to the DART Rail station on Mockingbird Lane near US 75. It was a revolutionary concept when built in 2001, and still remains the standard-bearer for much of Dallas’ urban mixed use projects.

Looking for an adorable home that’s close to a fantastic area, has access to mass transit, is updated inside, feels large but not too big, and feeds into award-winning schools? Then you’ll love this Austin stone cottage in Wilshire Heights.

This is one of my favorite East Dallas nabes sheerly for the location: bordered by Mockingbird Lane to the north, Skillman Street to the west, Abrams road to the east, and McCommas to the south, this neighborhood has access to great amenities with fantastic architecture and is close to tons of retail, including the Lakewood Whole Foods. It feeds into Stonewall Jackson Elementary, J.L. Long Middle School, and Woodrow Wilson High School — all sought after, high-achieving, Dallas ISD campuses.

And 6102 Penrose, marketed by Dallas City Center Realtor Erika Warfield, is nothing to sniff at!

There is an incredible misconception of just exactly where Lakewood is. Most people assume that, if it’s west of White Rock Lake and south of Northwest Highway, then you’re in Lakewood. No, not really, guys. Those areas, I sometimes refer to as Lakewood Lite. They are close to the lake, but are too far west or north to be inside Lakewood proper.

The more you know, and all that.

Of course, you’re wondering what the point of all this talk of Lakewood is going, and let me tell you that there is this incredible house at 6118 Ellsworth Avenue in the Hal Moseley neighborhood. While it’s not in Lakewood, but instead closer to Wilshire Heights, don’t let that make you think this is some piddly little house. This is a truly amazing property. Like, epic-level cool, guys. And it’s so interesting and it’s close to Wilshire Heights, so it feeds into Stonewall Jackson Elementary, and did I mention that it’s cool? It’s so cool.

As it turns out, I drove by Boy Scout Hill almost every single day and I didn’t even know it. Hailed as “virgin Blackland Prairie” and as a habitat for wildlife surrounding White Rock Lake, this hill is at the southwest corner of Mockingbird and Buckner Boulevard, just before the overpass to Old Lake Highlands and Peavy Road.

But after plans came to light that nearby residents and developers Lyle Burgin and Richard Kopf wanted to build a restaurant and parking lot on Boy Scout Hill, nearby residents objected in the way they usually do — signs were printed and placed in front yards all over neighborhoods surrounding White Rock Lake, protests and pickets were organized, and a website was constructed.

Stonewall Terrace is a fantastic neighborhood. The homes are adorable, there are restaurants and shops everywhere, there are tons of pedestrians and cyclists, nearby mass transit, and there’s easy access to North Central Expressway. But what really makes Stonewall Terrace a fantastic family neighborhood is its namesake elementary campus, Stonewall Jackson Elementary.

5915 Anita LivingThis neighborhood has pulled the school up by its bootstraps thanks to a super supportive early childhood PTA that has kept the trains running on time. That’s one of the reasons that this neighborhood, which is near the exceptionally popular M Streets, has skyrocketed as of late. But if you think you can’t find a deal in Stonewall Terrace, think again.

This adorable cottage at 5915 Anita St. is listed by Dallas City Center Realtor Patricia McCrite for $379,500. With almost 2,000 square feet, you’d be surprised at the size of this home from the curb. It is so adorable, isn’t it? But it’s truly spacious and still private feeling, thanks to the updates this home has received.

5915 Anita Kitchen

With beautiful built-ins and a lovely formal living and dining area, you could hold intimate get-togethers in this home. The kitchen is a bit modest, but there’s still room for a breakfast nook, so it’s not too terribly small. If you’re ambitious, you could expand the kitchen into the formal dining room and open the entire area up.

There’s a den, and the master suite features a living area, too. With three bedrooms and two baths, there’s plenty of room for a family. And with the hardwood floors, tons of great built-ins, this home will have room to grow.

The backyard features a huge deck and separate fenced-in area, perfect for a family with a couple of pooches. What do you think of this home?

6606 Williamson Front

If you’ve ever driven past the light at Mockingbird Lane and Williamson Road on your way to White Rock Lake Park, then you know what house we’re featuring for our Friday Four Hundred. I’ve always loved this house, as it sits right on White Rock Creek and is so pretty from the outside. However, I’ve thought that the location is less than enviable.

6606 Williamson Kitchen

Still, that’s not completely turning me off from 6606 Williamson, a remodeled ranch with a modern vibe and tons of huge windows. You can really soak up the view from this home, which has a terraced backyard and a lovely bank of low-e picture windows. This is such a fun renovation job, one that includes art niches, specialized lighting, and an open kitchen that is perfect for those intimate dinner parties where everyone huddles around the chef as if they’ve waltzed into Benihana for a dinner and a show.

6606 Williamson Living

The open floor plan is accented by the gorgeous stained hardwood floors throughout the home. You’ll also adore the way the home flows from the stainless steel front door to the kitchen and living areas. The kitchen, which features top-of-the-line stainless appliances and a chic and trendy concrete countertop, has tons of storage and a cool, industrial vibe.

6606 Williamson View

The living area is the perfect place to catch a glimpse of the abundant wildlife in East Dallas. Hang a few cool bird feeders (Wild Birds Unlimited is just up the street!) and you’ll attract a copious number of colorful attendants, all which seem an arm’s length away when viewed from these gigantic picture windows. The skylights will help give you light enough to read your bird book, too.

6606 Williamson Master 6606 Williamson Master Bath

The home has two bedrooms and two baths, and while I’ve come to a certain level of peace on the fact that some people aren’t in love with bathtubs and leave them out of their master bathrooms entirely, I have a super hard time understanding the absence of a second sink. It almost seems like a feature that should be mandatory. Tell me I’m wrong, people!

6606 Williamson Deck 6606 Williamson Creek Terrace

But if you buy this home, which is listed by Ebby Halliday Realtor Dick Clements for $499,850, you’re not really buying it for the beds and the baths (although I’m sure you’ll be glad they’re there during certain times of the day). You’re buying it for this amazing terraced deck and patio, which is practically RIGHT ON TOP of White Rock Creek. And that’s reason enough for me to put in a bid. What about you?

6346 Anita Front

Yes, we talk a lot about Lakewood Elementary and how amazing it is, thanks to a very active parent group, the Lakewood Early Childhood PTA. But let’s not forget that there are other great elementary schools in this area, including Stonewall Jackson Elementary.

This is an amazing, trend-setting campus that started its own educational garden before they were de rigeur. And surrounding this great elementary campus are some super cute neighborhoods, including Wilshire Heights. This lovely area is bounded by Mockingbird Lane on the north, Abrams road on the east, and Skillman on the west. It has great walkability and density without losing that close-knit neighborhood feel. On one of the through streets you’ll find 6346 Anita, a superb little traditional with some really fabulous updates. It’s listed by Randi Rummer of TexHomes Realty for $309,900.

With three bedrooms, one full bath, and more than 1,400 square feet, this home is perfect for a small family or empty nesters looking to downsize and simplify. Built in 1950 and recently updated, this home still features some amazing details original to post-war traditional architecture, including ornate crown moulding and a lovely back porch. You’ll adore the refinished hardwood floors, too, and if you think you’ll be turned off by the single bathroom, wait until you see this stunner.

6346 Anita Kitchen

Of course, this home is super cozy, and with a fireplace, archways, and remodeled kitchen, you’re sure to be comfy at home during the next Icemaggedon. You’ll appreciate the updated light fixtures, too, including the can lights in the kitchen. Travertine, stainless steel, and granite line this updated commissary, which has French doors opening to the backyard.

Now, the bathroom has a vanity, an oversized Kohler jetted tub, and a full-sized shower with dual heads to get you really, really clean. Tons of neutral stone and granite, with a mix of chrome and oil-rubbed bronze hardware keep it from feeling too modern. Sure, its a lot of features crammed into a bath, but with only one commode in this house, you’ll be glad to have it all.

The backyard is so lovely, too, with a nice covered deck that leads from the kitchen to the garage. You also have a lovely little backyard, not too much maintenance for those who want to downsize but just enough room to have a labor-of-love garden.

I think this home is a great property at a good price for a wonderful neighborhood. What do you think?
