I Took One Mahjong Lesson. Then I Started Shopping.

Twenty-four hours ago, I knew exactly three things about mahjong.
It involved beautiful tiles. It seemed to have developed a cult-like following. And somehow, a centuries-old game had become the hottest invitation in town.
After just one lesson, I get it.
I walked away knowing I’d barely scratched the surface. Oddly enough, that wasn’t discouraging. It was intriguing.

Still, the biggest surprise wasn’t the game itself. It was everything that came after.
Take a look at the stats. According to Yelp, searches for clubs jumped more than 4,400 percent, while searches for lessons climbed more than 800 percent. And in January, 2026, Google Trends reported a 525 percent spike in interest. Nowhere does that feel more obvious than Dallas.
Ours is a city that has never needed much encouragement to entertain.
Mahjong simply gives us another reason to do it.
Dallas instructor Nancy Franks has watched the wave firsthand. While her clients vary in age, profession, and lifestyle, one thing is constant.
“People’s eyes light up when they finally get it. That’s when I know they’ll be back,” she said. “Mahjong teaches life. You learn to pivot when the hand you wanted isn’t the hand you’re dealt. But chances are, you discover something better.”

Then something else happened. I stopped thinking about the game and started thinking tile sets. I wasn’t alone.
Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Prada, and Jonathan Adler have all embraced the game’s unmistakable aesthetic, while Dallas-based The Mahjong Line, Oh My Mahjong, and Peace Love Mahjong have transformed tiles, racks and mats into covetable design objects.

For design enthusiasts, the process is surprisingly familiar.
Are we drawn to clean, understated minimalism? Rich, saturated color? Tailored classics? A little Hollywood Regency? Full-blown maximalism?
Turns out, shopping for a mahjong set isn’t all that different than choosing wallpaper, upholstery or art. You’re not looking for the “best” one. You’re looking for the one that feels like home.
Nancy’s advice was refreshingly simple: “Buy the one that makes you smile every time you open the box.”
It’s hard to argue with that.
Here’s how to take your mahjong obsession to the next level.
The Sets. Major luxury brands have literally come to the table with investment-worthy options. Closer to home, Dallas-based The Mahjong Line, Peace Love Mahjong, and Oh My Mahjong have elevated the game with colorful collections that are as display-worthy as they are playable.

Personal style also comes into play: Coastal. Western. Even floating pool sets and whimsical mermaids. Turns out, there’s a mahjong set for every design aesthetic.

The Accessories: From racks and mats to storage bags and pushers, consider them the mahjong equivalent of a great handbag.
The Table: Old-school folding models? So yesterday. Today’s game tables are designed to blend seamlessly into the home, doubling as dining or library tables when the tiles are tucked away.
The Vibe. Fresh flowers. Signature cocktails. A favorite playlist. Ambient lighting. The game may bring everyone together, but it’s the atmosphere they’ll remember.
Bottom line? The lesson lasted three hours. The decorating project is still underway.
