Updating vs Remodel debate begins

2417 Boyd Avenue is an exquisite remodeled home in Parkhill…minutes from Colonial Country Club (photos: Tourmax)

We’ve discussed this before but it never hurts to bring it up again.  There is a difference between “updating” and “remodeling.”

To this Bowtie Realtor, “updating” is doing a little bit of this and a little bit of that.  Maybe it’s not the bare minimum, but it’s certainly not going full-blown remodel.  Repainting a few rooms or cabinets, sprucing up the yard or changing fixtures — that’s what I would call updating.

To the left is the kitchen circa 2012. To the right is the remodeled kitchen, complete with  Viking appliances, Restoration Hardware fixtures, and all the trendy colors of today

Remodeling is where you nearly take the home apart and bring it back to life again.  New materials, new rooms, new everything — that’s what I would call remodeling.  Just wait to see the Tarrant County Tuesday home and you be the judge.

Luxury family living takes on new meaning at one Colleyville house with resort-style outdoor living and over 6,000 square feet of interior space.

Located in the exclusive gated Castleton Manor community, the home at 6704 Ethridge Ct. is a custom build that sits on a 0.46-acre lot in a cul-de-sac. The neighborhood has a private park with a fishing pond, playground, picnic pavilion, and walking path, as well as easy access to the popular Cotton Belt Trail. It’s a short drive to Timarron Country Club, with its 18-hole Nelson-designed championship golf course, and only 9 miles west of DFW International Airport.

“It’s everything a family could want, from the house itself and its incredible backyard, to the neighborhood and sense of community spirit,” said listing agent Jocelyn Croney Sandruck with Re/Max Trinity. “The schools are stellar, too — Colleyville Elementary is top-rated and near the house.”

This home has five bedrooms, five full bathrooms, two half baths, four living areas, two dining areas, and 6,149 square feet on two stories, sitting on 0.46 acres. Would you like a tour?

Open houses are like real estate on parade. Houses, condos, and townhomes don their finest to wave to the crowds and make an impression.

Today, the parade is led by the three properties in our CandysDirt.com Dallas Open Houses of the Week column. We’ve scoured the DFW listings and picked the ones to recommend for your weekend open house viewing. They all have that je ne sais quoi that makes them stand out.

This week, our houses range in price from $359,900 to $1.575 million. Will you take part in the real estate parade?

3778 W. 6th Front

While they may not be my favorite homes ever, I do love houses that have a funky, Devil-may-care vibe to them. They’re the “anything goes” type of home, and their mish-mash of decor, colors, and materials proves a method to the madness of an artists’ mind. So I was happily surprised to see this cute bungalow in Fort Worth’s Country Club Heights neighborhood on the market.

This two-bedroom, two bath cottage is a home in which the seller has made full use of every color in the paint bucket. Combining patterns, wood, mosaics, and glass in a way that seems to have no rhyme or reason is a very fun way to keep your interest, and to make a small space (1,482 square feet!) feel much larger. There’s always another nook, another detail, another little surprise!
