When former NASA astronaut, Captain James A. Lovell, first listed his beloved Horseshoe Bay lake house back in 2016, I thought it would be scooped up faster than you can say lightyear – but as many real estate markets prove, it takes time to find the right buyer.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and wife, Renda, aren’t waiting until they can find a buyer for their waterfront property in Horseshoe Bay Resort before putting down roots in Washington D.C. They bought a D.C. home back in February as a private, off-market sale for approximately $5.6 million. The sellers were none other than former AOL executive Richard Hanlon and his wife, Pam who paid $3.15 million for the home in 2011.

But it is their new neighbors that are going to keep things interesting. This leafy and luxurious D.C. neighborhood of Kalorama also has Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner as the new renters of a home owned by a Chilean billionaire. The Obamas have also purchased a stately home from former spokesman Joe Lockhart, and don’t forget one of the biggest D.C. home sales of all time that went to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in the same neighborhood.

Joanna and I were both sharpening our pencils and left brains for Uncle Sam today. That’s why I grabbed this house at 312 Wennmohs Place for our Columbus Day pleasure. So I thought we just needed a little “waterworld” to celebrate the man who helped discover America.

Carolyn remained at Telenet until her retirement, while I went on to do several DC-area startups ending up as the founding CTO of AOL.  We were married in 1989 and retired to Texas in 1996.  We’ve got two sons – Dan and Jason – both of whom now live in Austin. We spend most of our time at our home in Horseshoe Bay, although we now spend 2 or 3 days a week at our condo in downtown Austin.  We spend a lot of time attending the performing arts and I’m a huge Longhorn sports fan – especially basketball.
