We have been drooling over the Lawn at Glen Abbey now for about a year, long enough for the good folks at Hawkins-Welwood to finish up another astonishingly gorgeous home for us to consider as the perfect “downsizer” specimen. Bonus brownie points: it’s 4099 square feet of luxury living. The master and study are on the first floor, giving you a second bedroom option, with two bedrooms and a game room up.

This home is located towards the rear of the leafy community, and backs up to a large green-way. That’s right, you will have the perception of a golf-course-size lawn without one bit of the upkeep.  (The actual lot for this home is 45 by 127.)

What do most downsizing baby Boomers want in a home? John Hawkins would know: a focus on first floor living and all the amenities they are used to in the larger estates they are shedding. Just not the yard, exterior maintenance, and please, not too much house.

I have always been a fan of Glen Abbey, that gated, pristine collection of luxury estates developed on what was once the secluded ranch home of Clint Murchison Sr., a famed Texas oil magnate and philanthropist. Cowboys connection: Clint Murchison was the father of Dallas Cowboys co-founder Clint Murchison Jr. Glen Abbey was created on the land sold to former Dallas Mayor Robert Folsom by Lupe Murchison, widow of John Murchison, Clint Jr.’s brother and co-founder of the Dallas Cowboys. Originally 100 luxury lots, Hawkins-Welwood Homes built 60 of the 100 amazing homes there.

That land, once part of the famed Murchison ranch, is now Glen Abbey. And Glen Abbey has a sister property right next door,  that retains all the luxury of those magnificent mansion spreads, but offer far more manageable home ownership options.

It’s called The Lawn at Glen Abbey. The Lawn at Glen Abbey began construction of homes in 2016. It may very well be my next forever home.

Modern Mediterranean

Why is a good interior designer important when selling a house? Look back at images from 50 years ago of any home created by interior design icons like Billy Baldwin, Albert Hadley, or David Hicks, and you’ll realize you could live there today. Good designers create a look that will stand the test of time. Dallas has just such a designer in Jan Showers, and she is responsible for the comfort, quality, and class of this modern Mediterranean at 25 Glen Abbey Drive. (more…)

Once in a while, an architect gets a call for the dream job. Several years ago, Graham Greene, a principal with Oglesby-Greene Architects, got that call. The client wanted a timeless home built on a beautiful lot that would capture its natural setting  Green went above and beyond, creating an architectural icon at 40 Braewood Place in Glen Abbey. Every iconic home needs a name, so we’re christening this estate the Glen Abbey Glass House.

1608 Dowling Drive Irv extONLY $1,050,000 to live in the former, totally fabulously renovated Cottonwood Valley home of one of the most cherished starting quarterbacks in America, Tony Romo and his beautiful wife, Candice! This home will be gone by Friday.

1608 Dowling Drive, Irving.

You get a private, gated community, a beefed up security system, Candice’s deftly creative hand at interior design, and the Four Seasons Hotel and Resort a short jog or golf cart ride away (there is a tunnel under MacArthur). The Four Seasons is always alive with activity, be it fireworks on the fourth of July, carnivals, bands, the family pool with white sand beach, sports plus fabulous food and restaurants.

Lots of local celebs live in the area. Across MacArthur is the exclusive Enclave, surrounded by the world-famous TPC at the Four Seasons. This is where DeMarcus Ware and Derrick Holland call home. Cottonwood Valley also has its own golf course for residents, and the Four Seasons manages both so if you are a member at the Four Seasons, you can play both courses.

I mean, this house ought to be as easy to sell as a slice of mom’s apple pie!

Know that this was definitely a bachelor pad house before Tony married Candice Crawford back in 2011. She had told me they were moving into the Cottonwood Valley home, but that she would be doing some re-decorating.

And boy oh boy, did she!Dowling Drive overview (more…)

40 Braewood extYou know how we told you that Tony Romo is building a giant, and I do mean giant, home up in Glen Abbey?  Surely you are caught up on all this. That story ran last April — the home must be nearing completion.

The new Romo home is next door to Peter Shaddock, a well-known, highly respected Dallas builder and architect with excellent tastes. In fact, you could say Peter is a Home Connoisseur. We need him on this blog!

Romo’s lot, appraised at $3,272,550 just for the dirt,  had been started by an oil man who just abandoned it. Word it Peter Shaddock is such a perfectionist he spent his own money to clean up the oil baron’s lot so it would be pretty to look at before Tony even started building.

Well, how’d you like to be his neighbor AND own a dramatic, architecturally significant, award-winning house to boot? (more…)

Update: I have confirmed that this is indeed Tony Romo’s foundation. The building site has a huge fence around it, so likely this will be the last photo we shall see. (Cough cough.)  Also, Tom Weber is the architect, Robbie Fusch is the architect of record for Glen Abbey, truly one of the most beautiful developments in Dallas.

Is this Tony Romo’s foundation to his new home in Glen Abbey? To tell the truth, we are not sure. This photo was tweeted by

‏@Matt_Mendoza15, who claims this is the launching pad for the new Romo estate. The Romo house WILL have a huge basement, I hear.

It makes sense. Why? (more…)

67 Abbey Woods exterior This is a rare opportunity to get yourself inside one of North Dallas’ most coveted gated communities with a famous future neighbor to boot: Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Tony Romo. And talk about a lock and leave delight, this is your downsizing dream in a guarded, gated community. The one story, decked out 3216 square foot home looks onto the creek and the 3rd Fairway of Bent Tree Golf Course. You have a beautiful green yard without any of the work! The home has three bedrooms all with en suite baths, one powder room, formals and a lovely patio off the master with retractable mosquito screens. Glen Abbey is getting a lot of buzz now thanks to Candice and Tony Romo building a mega manse up there a few blocks over. To get in for less than a million is, well, almost like almost like scoring a safety on the opening play of the Super Bowl! (Rarely ever happens!)
