Cliff Welch, AIA, is a Dallas-based architect who champions modern architecture and designs with inspiration drawn from modern architecture of the last century.

His background includes working with the late Dallas modernist Bud Oglesby, later becoming a principal at Design International before starting his own firm, Welch Architecture, in January 2000.

One of his designs, located on East Lake Highlands Drive, is featured on the 10th annual White Rock Home Tour April 25-26. When the tour started in 2005, it showcased midcentury modern homes in the White Rock area; it has now expanded to include new construction, as well.

Welch earned his Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Master of Architecture from the University of Texas at Arlington. His work has received multiple Merit and Citation Awards from the Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), as well as their coveted Young Architect of the Year award. He has also earned honors from Preservation Dallas, the Texas Society of Architects, D Home magazine, and the AIA.

Welch is the past president of the Dallas Architectural Foundation and taught graduate-level architecture classes at UT Arlington. He is a past executive board member of the Dallas Chapter AIA, also serving two years as their Commissioner of Design, and has chaired multiple chapter events, including various home tours. He also served as a design awards juror for other chapters around the state.

Welch’s White Rock Home Tour house’s elegant simplicity and open spaces incorporate modern design to create an exception environment.

I’m mixing it up a little this week, mostly because I’ve been inspired. While driving home from White Rock Coffee a few weeks ago with my pal Joanna England, we passed this amazing house on East Lake Highlands. I don’t know if you’ve realized this about me yet, but I kinda dig mid-century modern design, and this place is THE perfect mid-century model without having to pour in all the money of updating an older home.

It’s listed by David Collier at David Griffin and Company Realtors for $550,00. There’s no pictures listed yet, but you can see plans online. Turns out, it was designed by architect extraordinaire Cliff Welch. I went to his website and checked out his design portfolio, and folks, this guy is kind of a badass.

According to Art House Dallas:

“His firm’s focus is modern architecture, concentrating on residential, interiors, and small-scale commercial work. He has been a leading resource and proponent for the restoration and preservation of post-war modernism in Dallas.”

Look at all those clean lines…I’m in heaven!

A Tyler, Texas native, Cliff has local and national design accolades coming out the wazoo. And this is how I know this guy is cool: he also designs tree houses. Cliff, meet your new biggest fan.

Binsford House

I have long been a fan of the Preservation Dallas home tours, as they tend to feature truly stunning restorations in Dallas. If you’ve been looking for an opportunity to go, this is the year.

The Preservation Dallas Fall Architectural Tour will include the Binsford Home. It’s the Spanish-style mansion that was going to be auctioned, but then it wasn’t, and then was eventually purchased by North Oak Cliff developer Jim Lake located at 1704 W. Colorado. You’ll also recall that there was some friction between neighbors in Kessler Park over this home hosting weddings and snarling traffic.

If you’ve always wanted to see inside that home, as well as two Turtle Creek Boulevard estates, an intact midcentury modern, a stunning Frank Welch overlooking White Rock Lake, as well as a home on Lakewood Boulevard, you can buy tickets to the Oct. 31 home tour right now.

The 14th annual White Rock Home Tour is one for the record books, and CandysDirt.com — the official media sponsor of this year’s tour — is giving you an exclusive first look at the seven incredible modern homes selected for the annual event. Discounted early bird tickets are on sale now for $15 each at whiterockhometour.org.

For the first time in the tour’s history, ticket holders will get a gander at a work-in-progress — specifically, a delicious modern design by architect Cliff Welch in Old Lake Highlands. Patrons will be able to walk through the large home before construction is complete. Welch, as well as builder Clay Robinson, will be on hand to talk about the home. Two of the newer builds on this year’s home tour are designs by CandysDirt.com Approved Builder New Leaf Custom Homes, both of which are located on Forest Trail just behind Flagpole Hill. A sexy design from A. GRUPPO architect Thad Reeves is worth the modest ticket price, too.

“Each of our tour homes offers something unique for our guests,” said White Rock Home Tour chair Alyson Black. We couldn’t agree more!

New Leaf Custom Homes will have two of their builds on this year’s White Rock Home Tour, both of which are on Forest Trail in the White Rock Valley neighborhood.
