Every time they do a custom home, for Melissa and Scott Powell — the power couple behind New Leaf Custom Homes — it’s a chance to make someone’s dream a reality.

“With custom home building, almost everybody has a learning curve,” Melissa said as we enjoyed the early spring sunlight pouring through the wall of windows in her family’s modern home. “A lot of it is accommodating ideas from clients, and then finding the right craftsman or subcontractor to do those creative, edgy things.”

That’s a common theme for New Leaf Custom Homes — a CandysDirt.com Approved Builder — and the Powells. The brand is so client-focused that each home is a completely new vision and the results are a category by themselves.

But the family’s personal home, which is definitely worth the shuttle ride during this weekend’s White Rock Home Tour, was an exercise in stepping out of their comfort zone.

Not only did Scott and Melissa build their dream home, but they did it in a way that was easy on the environment without sacrificing style. It’s definitely an inspiration, from the suspended-slab foundation to the floor-to-ceiling windows to the reclaimed wood siding to the solar panel array.

You can still score your tickets for this weekend’s tour, which not only features the Powells’ personal home on Forest Trail, but another beautiful build from New Leaf on the same street.

The White Rock Home Tour is only a couple of weeks away so we are putting the spotlight on one of our favorites, 6522 Trammel Drive! The exquisite A. Gruppo Architects-designed home was built in 2017 and offers 2,650-square-feet of sophisticated luxury living. This includes one-of-kind custom touches from a swinging TV partition to stunning walnut built-ins and polycarbonate walls. But what really makes this home sing?

A Study Of Light And Lighting

According to the owners, Lori and Jim Louis – who both have architecture backgrounds – the home is a study of light and lighting.

“The Polygal light monitors (polycarbonate material used instead of windows in some locations) allow a beautiful quality of natural light to filter in during the day without the need for window coverings,” dishes Lori. “It is translucent and manages UV rays so it is private and controls glare, heat, etc. Between the glass lined courtyard and Polygal light monitors there is natural light all day. In addition, there are skylights on top of the jewel box light crown which bring in natural light to create a soft glow all day long.”

The 14th annual White Rock Home Tour is one for the record books, and CandysDirt.com — the official media sponsor of this year’s tour — is giving you an exclusive first look at the seven incredible modern homes selected for the annual event. Slated for the weekend of April 27-28, tour-goers a close-up look at two Midcentury Modern homes and five new modern homes, each of which offers can’t miss details and design. Discounted early bird tickets are on sale now for $15 each at whiterockhometour.org.

For the first time in the tour’s history, ticket holders will get a gander at a work-in-progress — specifically, a delicious modern design by architect Cliff Welch in Old Lake Highlands. Patrons will be able to walk through the large home before construction is complete. Welch, as well as builder Clay Robinson, will be on hand to talk about the home. Two of the newer builds on this year’s home tour are designs by CandysDirt.com Approved Builder New Leaf Custom Homes, both of which are located on Forest Trail just behind Flagpole Hill. A sexy design from A. GRUPPO architect Thad Reeves is worth the modest ticket price, too.

“Each of our tour homes offers something unique for our guests,” said White Rock Home Tour chair Alyson Black. We couldn’t agree more!

New Leaf Custom Homes will have two of their builds on this year’s White Rock Home Tour, both of which are on Forest Trail in the White Rock Valley neighborhood.

There’s a reason why the White Rock Home Tour is one of the most well-attended tours in all of Dallas — the focus on the East Dallas location and showing off the area’s stout inventory of modern properties is a magic formula. There’s no other tour like it, and its success hinges on the well-organized volunteers who make sure that every tour-goer has a great experience.

If the White Rock Home Tour ever makes a coffee table book of the homes it has featured over its 13 years, then I can say, rather unequivocally, that this year’s tour stops will have two-page spreads and thorough write-ups. That’s just how amazing this year’s tour is, complete with an epic time capsule, fantastic new builds, and a stunningly renovated midcentury modern.

Speaking of stunningly renovated midcentury moderns, we have to give you a sneak peek at this beauty renovated by Shawn Watkins of Watkins Remodeling and Repair. You might recognize it, as we featured it here on CandysDirt.com when it was still completely intact. We noted then that the home could stand a freshening up.

And you can tell that Watkins, with his keen eye for color and shape, did exactly that. The home is truly amazing, and I can’t wait to see it on April 21-22 for the White Rock Home Tour. Tickets are already on sale, and we’re sure you’re going to want to snag them once you get a glance at the bang-up job Watkins did on this beauty. Jump to find out more about this beautiful Lake Highlands midcentury modern that is ready for any party this summer can throw at it!

This midcentury modern is so fabulous that White Rock Home Tour organizers want you to drive to Garland to see it. (Photos: Angela Flournoy)

This year, organizers of the White Rock Home Tour — East Dallas’ premiere modern home tour — are asking tour-goers to go the extra mile (actually six miles if you’re counting). The reason? An amazing time capsule of a home located in Garland that has received only the pickiest of updates.

But Garland?

White Rock Home Tour chair Alyson Black assures me that this home is so spectacular that it’s worth the trip. “This home was built in 1965 by commercial architects Craycroft Lacy & Assoc. for a prominent TV news man in a scenic area of old Garland, and was lovingly restored a few years ago,” Black said. And after getting a sneak peek at the photos of this particular home, I have to agree: IT IS FABULOUS! In fact, it’s so fabulous that we’re sure that once people get a gander at this stellar midcentury modern and the other five epic tour homes, they’re going to want to score tickets lickety split! And here’s the best news, tickets just went on sale for the April 21-22 home tour!

Get out.

Those were the first words out of my mouth when I opened the photos of 10849 Clearbrook: Get. Out. An ardent fan of midcentury modern architecture, I feel a very strong mix of awe and envy when encountering a specimen like this one. You have your sports, I have my midcentury houses. Properties like this make me giddy – and it doesn’t hurt that this stop on the upcoming White Rock Home Tour is furnished to delight the eye.

Realtor Brandon Stewart has had the pleasure of selling the home twice – once in 2012, before the house underwent massive renovations and again in 2014, to the current owner and friend, Jeri Paduch. He shared with us the pre-renovation photos, which give us even more appreciation for its current state.

“This is one of my favorite midcentury moderns in the whole city,” said Stewart. As a midcentury modern home owner himself, he’s a member of the ‘takes one to know one’ club.
