Calling All Decorators: I've Got a TP Dilemma
Share News:
I need some advice, folks. I live in a quaint little 1950s home in Casa Linda, and I’ve spent the worst better part of 4 1/2 years remodeling it. It’s come a long way, people, believe me. But today, I ran into one of my most perplexing decisions while trying to finish up the guest bath before our house guests come in for the weekend. Where the hell should I hang the toilet paper holder?
This is what it looked like before I took a sledge hammer and crow bar to it.
This is after.
The guest bath isn’t spacious by any means, so I don’t really have room for a stand. Before I demoed the bathroom, the tp holder was between the toilet and tub, but it felt a little cramped and made for an awkward exchange. I might ad that I’m also about to install a pedestal sink, so I have misgivings about putting my tp on display. Since I went cheap doing a lot of the work myself, I splurged (for me) on all Moen faucets and accessories, but still, it’s a toilet paper holder, right? Who wants to see that?
So this is where you come in, our all-knowing CandsyDirt followers…where do I put this damn thing?
Umm next to the toilet Amy! Either side. You're going to have a sink next to the toilet so either between sink/toilet or bathtub toilet. The only problem you run into with either scenario is if you have small people splashing about a lot but really no one want to lean forward and grab it from the opposite wall.

BTW I want to know who did the remodel? It's fabulous!
I hired out the tile work, but I did all the demo, wallpaper removal, wall texturing, painting, etc. Is it weird to have the toilet paper between the toilet and sink where it's visible?
Not on the opposite wall. On behalf of short people everywhere, please keep it within arms reach of the commode.

Don't offer TP to discourage such "undesirable actions" in your guest cottage.

What about a standing toilet paper holder so you can move it if necessary?
We have one. Ha.
No Amy it's cool, toilet paper is visible in all bathrooms. Just go over to Pinterest and look around. Holly good idea, again if there are not kids around to use the holder as a "laser" or a "sword"!
Amy message me your tile guy. Looks like they did a stellar job. My hat is off to you for all the demo work!
My tile guy is Dana Wright. He did the guest bathroom and our kitchen floor. Great guy and very affordable. http://ddwct.com
Great question: are you guys left or right handed? That should determine whether you put it on the right side (near the tub, where it might be cramped) or the left. I don't like the floor stands because if a guy is in there you'll have to wash the whole dang thing. Try as they will to aim, they miss.Swear I will do a whole wall of a bathroom as a urinal one day.I also see no reason why you shouldn't see the TP in between the commode and the pedestal sink. BTW the redo is amazing!

Also I am married to someone who insists that the toilet paper be hung so it rolls in front, not the back. This is reaching the upper pinnacle of OCD behavior, but just wanted to know if anyone out there has ever heard of the "right" way or "wrong" way to hang the toilet paper. Seriously, I want to drive him nuts, I just go change all the TP in our house!

Front!
Front…easier to locate! Look at the fancy hotels…how do they hang their paper?
oh yeah front all the way
Walter is correct! It is the correct way!
Frount is right, But that is so so petty. I guess I feel that way becausei am a real redneck and i could care less how it gets hung it works just the same when you tare it off.
Front. Definitely. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toilet_paper_orientation
For a public restroom stall with a dispenser holding two rolls of paper, Donald Knuth proposes classifying users into big-choosers (those who take paper from the roll that is currently larger) and little-choosers (those who do the opposite). Letting denote the probability that a random user is a big-chooser and that of a little-chooser, Knuth uses contour integration and generating functions to find the expected number of sheets left on the larger roll when the smaller one runs out.
There was actually a social experiment done that lays claim that people who put the toilet paper on the holder with the paper rolling over the top are more caring and giving individuals.
Those who place the roll on the holder with the paper rolling from behind the roll are suppose to be more stingy, self centered people.

I'd post more, but I'd be considered OCD.
David this has to go on my blog! Miss you! Are you frozen over?
Candy at least he doesn't he insist on a little fold like they do at nice hotels : ).. or does he!
Not yet!
Ceiling track and chrome bar. You can turn it right left and front. Everybody will be delighted.
I'm not a fan of pedestal sinks at all – zero counter space (this was particularly annoying when I wore contacts) and no storage space for cleaning supplies and extra TP. I say either do a freestanding TP holder or do a small cabinet (instead of pedestal) and put the holder on the side of the cabinet. And yes, Candy, there IS a "right" way to hang TP! However, sometimes the "wrong" way makes it harder for toddlers to find (and then unravel the entire roll out into the hallway….).
We have a similar situation and we use a stand with TP holder on top and magazine holder on bottom. Placed in front of toilet at corner of tub. Not ashamed of TP holder. It looks good. Very convenient. Bought at BB&B.
Purchase one of the many standing TP holder. They come in various styles and look great…best thing about them no holes in the wall
I would use a spare tissue holder.

guests can easily pull the roll off and on so they aren't reaching too far forward or craning around.
You might want to investige using a commercial chrome recessed paper holder, like in hotels. It could be installed between the toliet and tub or toliet and sink. Should look less cramped as a freestanding or traditional holder. I enclosed a link below so you can see what I am talking about.

Thank you so much!
