With Election Season in Full Swing, is a Campaign Sign in The Front Yard a Good Idea?

Share News:

I doubt a piece of cardboard and a stake is going to turn off a prospective buyer, but would you want to risk it?

Apparently yes, at least for some people. I’ve passed several homes on my rounds through Dallas’ many upscale neighborhoods with not only a “For Sale” sign in the front yards, but large signs extolling their picks for public office.

To me, it doesn’t make sense. You put a ton of dough into staging a home so it will get top dollar, you hire an agent who knows the neighborhood and will list the house at a price that won’t have buyers scoffing or blowing coffee into their computer screens, and then you hire a photographer to come in and take great images of your home.

And then you potentially screw it all up by anchoring a 3-foot-square campaign sign at the convergence of a corner lot. Oh, and I have nothing against Jeb Hensarling. Just using this home/campaign as an example.

Maybe I’m overreacting. What do you think?

I agree with not taking the risk. however as a family of 7 and growing, I am looking at your house, the space, the yard, etc., and I don’t really care who you bubble in.

You aren't overreacting Candy. It's a tacky touch.

No sign but a "For Sale" sign should be in the yard if you are wanting to sell your house, PERIOD.

Interesting point. But on the flip side it might help your home sell. But then again what If your next door neighbor has an oposing political view than the potential buyer. At least they will know which house not to go to for some sugar.

Very interesting point. I wonder how much good those political signs actually do. Does it sway our neighbors to vote for the candidate that we endorse? Or is it more a form of expression. I don't know…

Kirk, Spot on! During staging we advise removal of political signs as well as flags with university affiliations. If you have a car in the driveway/ garage, take the bumper stickers off!

The Meadows (75230) where I live is infested with roofing signs since June 13, 2012 and has an over abundance of political signs. It is total visual pollution on every well manicured street. In addition there are skylight, gutter, pool, estate sale, garage sale, open house, Komen race warnings, lost dogs, homes for sale, for rent/lease, cars with for sale signs, huge storks for new babies … and if that wasn't enough Halloween decorations are going up daily. Then it will be Christmas.. sigh..

What Kirk and Karen said. I think it's an unnecessary risk to have ANY sign that has any potential to scare off or offend a potential buyer. You're trying to sell your home. Period. And Greg, if Thomas Jefferson were trying to sell his home then or now, I doubt he would have much trouble doing so. But most sellers are not Thomas Jefferson.

I suppose Ebby has no experience in these political/real estate marketing issues as her Preston Hollow office site is covered in political signs. Hope it doesnt hurt her business, her being a rookie and all.
