Historic Craftsman 6015 Bryan ParkwayEvery house has a story. Some are sad, some are funny, and then there are the love stories. Our Saturday Seven Hundred at 6015 Bryan Parkway is all about love. This historic Craftsman came close to just being a memory.

Thomas and Mary Louise Baldwin built the home in 1915, in what was then considered the suburbs. They were looking for an area with plenty of room to pursue their passion for gardening. Munger Place was just a streetcar ride away from the central business district, a perfect spot to build their dream home.

Fast forward to 2004. The once cherished and beautiful home had fallen into a terrible state of disrepair. Preservation Dallas placed The Baldwin House on their annual list of the most endangered historic resources. This list is compiled to raise awareness about the threats to historic properties in hopes someone will come forward to preserve them. Unfortunately, the buyer decided to tear the house down.

That’s when the neighborhood went into a frenzy.

Dwayne Jones was the Executive Director of Preservation Dallas at the time. Jones, former city council member Valetta Lill, and historian Virginia McAlester rallied the troops and kept the bulldozers bay, literally stopping them in the street. The owner did not want to do battle with the neighbors and sold it to Preservation Dallas. This incident was a significant moment in Dallas history as it marked the first time a threatened demolition in the city’s first historic district was averted.

As the best love stories go, along came buyers that were immediately smitten, understood the historical significance of the home, and had the time, energy and money to put this beauty back on her feet.

“The owners renovated this house with a loving passion,” listing agent Carolyn Albers Black with Ebby Halliday said. “They worked for three years to restore the house. They added on to the back of the house with a spacious open-plan kitchen and family room downstairs, and a master suite the upstairs.”

The house now has 3,209 square feet, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and one powder bath. There are also huge quarters with 1,000 square feet, two levels of living space, and a full kitchen.
