As a native Chicagoan, one unexpected side-effect of snow and ice is the ability to check out home insulation. If the roof is clean of snow and ice before temperatures rise above freezing, it means there is poor roof insulation that makes heating and air conditioning bills unnecessarily higher. Looking out from on my perch overlooking Preston Hollow, the wealthy are not immune to poor insulation with snow and ice on many a roof melted clean away.
