Midcentury modern connoisseurs will delight in this impeccably preserved Asian influenced specimen at 10110 Daria Drive in the gated Meaders James subdivision, which is just north of Walnut Hill and west of the Dallas North Tollway. It’s so close to Preston Hollow, and it’s in an area where you’ll find several distinctive properties like this one.

It’s one of those homes with such an exceptional floorplan and wonderful original details that is easily a high-caliber home, one worthy of being our High Caliber Home of the Week, sponsored by Lisa Peters of Caliber Home Loans.

The Asian influences in this one-owner 1957 midcentury modern are easy to spot, from the pagoda-style overhangs in the front, the capiz pendants made to look like paper lanterns flanking the entryway, which frames a front door with what appears to be Japanese characters. The themes continue throughout the home with exotic wood paneling, moulding that makes the walls look like Shoji screens, and plenty of natural finishes. Listing agent Debbie Sherrington says this home was once owned by Ed and Margaret Cupaioli. Designed by architect Jack Woods, this home is one on a block developed by Jules Herlong, Sherrington said. The street was named for Herlong’s daughter, Daria. Cupaioli’s sons, the last original owners on the block, are selling the home.

According to Sherrington, Ed Cupaioli was a dress designer, and he had amazing taste in furnishings and art. In fact, this home once hosted a fashion show! In fact, Cupaioli’s designs are still very popular among vintage clothing enthusiasts, and you can find his wool and silk suits and dresses on Etsy.

Walk through the large panel front door and you’ll spot a striking mercury glass paneled wall, which is a wonderful architectural feature that adds some drama to the foyer. The original terrazzo floors are in absolutely perfect condition, though there is some rather tragic-looking carpet in the formal living and dining areas.

This home would be a fantastic project for someone who wants the gorgeous original details of a true midcentury modern and only a little bit of work to freshen it up. Take down the drapes, lose the carpet, get rid of the wallpaper in the master suite and bathrooms, replace the toilets, upgrade the plumbing, and when you’re done you’ll have a home tour-worthy abode that will last for years and years.

Of course, lot values in this area are through the roof, so while we think this home would be a fantastic project for someone, Sherrington says she’s listed this home for under a million ($999,900, to be exact) because that’s the value of the lot.

To me, however, this home is such a gem. The original steel Geneva kitchen is in perfect condition, with original formica counters and linoleum floors. I love the sectional couch and the turquoise chairs. Sherrington says that once the home is sold, the furnishings might also be up for grabs.

The master bedroom is huge, and has a separate sitting and dressing area. Honestly, besides the wallpaper and the carpet, I am in love with this bedroom. It is just wonderful with the original dressing area. I would love to twirl a full-skirted dress in front of that huge mirror!

The home has three bedrooms, two full bathrooms and three half baths, and more than 3,100 square feet on more than three quarters of an acre. There’s also a picturesque pool in the backyard, as well as a cabana with a half bathroom and a kitchenette. There are tons of mature trees on this spacious lot, and with the gated neighborhood, it’s extra secure.

What’s the story of Jules Herlong? What other developments did he do? Google has zip, and the name sounds so familiar…

Jules Herlong was my uncle. He developed many properties in Dallas. Highland Park, Turtle Creek to name a couple. He began life in Fort Deposit, Al, but discovered a talent and love of building after managing the building of his first house in the Dallas area in the 1940s. He continued through the 70s and 80s. He was quite an interesting guy!

I would hate to see this house torn down. And I would keep those original kitchen cabinets.

Jules Herlong was my uncle, my mom’s brother. He rose from humble origins to building some of the most beautiful residences in Dallas. He was very focused on quality. Thank you so much for sharing this!!

Jules Herlong built my parent’s house that we lived in on Stichter in Preston Hollow. It is one of the few still standing today that hasn’t been torn down and replaced with new construction.
