East Dallas Real Estate is About to Go Up, Way Up, If This Young Man Takes Over Angela Hunt’s City Council Seat

It’s official: Bobby Abtahi is running for Dallas City Council, specifically the seat vacated by term-limited Angela Hunt.

Oh excuse me, it’s ROBERT Abtahi, former Dallas City Plan Commissioner.

You see, I know him as Bobby, a young man who was friends with my daughter in middle and high school and who, at the age of 16, demonstrated the most gentle-man like maturity I had ever seen in a kid. Was I surprised a few years later when they were together at SMU Law School? No, and I knew this day would come, as will more.

This will likely embarrass Bobby — Robert — but when my daughter was 15, shocker: she pulled a trick and got in trouble on lower Greenville Ave. Nothing really BAD, but of course I made a big deal out of it to keep her on the straight and narrow. Full disclosure: I wasn’t just a Helicopter mom, I was a Lear Jet mom, and my Friday and Saturday nights for YEARS were spent tracking teenagers. My kids turned out more than great. I think that when you have kids, you have a commitment to them and should make them the center of your life with high expectations.

One fall night, when I learned that her car had been towed from lower Greenville Ave.– correction, OUR car had been towed — because she was not where she was supposed to be, and was doing something she was too young to do,  she tried to cure the situation by cashing checks to get the car out. Of course, I had the title at home so ultimately she HAD to call me. Guess who never left her side and advised her to call home?

Bobby Abtahi.

Two years ago, in an editorial to theMorning News, Robert showed clearly how much he loved Dallas:

My uptown friends practically ignore me when I suggest having lunch somewhere south of the Trinity. They shrug me off when I suggest we spend the day at Cedar Crest Golf Course rather than Top Golf. They look at me like a mental patient when I offer up a late-night taqueria as an alternative to Taco Cabana.

(Ahem. And I know why!)

They are trapped in the bubble.

Too often, I hear negative things said about the various neighborhoods and parts of the city. The Uptown crowd loves to scoff at anything north of NorthPark Center and south of downtown. The North Dallas crowd is quick to bemoan what they consider to be confusing one-way streets and problems associated with parking in downtown.

If we are to become the big diverse city we strive to be, we must first get over our preconceived notions about the various parts of our city. Most of them are unfounded and outdated. Every part of Dallas has something special to offer, regardless of what you may think or hear people say.

“It’s my view that leaders who look for common ground and find ways to rally people around a common goal can accomplish great things,” Abtahi said in his campaign literature. “I want to bring that kind of collaborative leadership to city hall.”

Oh, he will, that and much more. I’m so proud of him! Robert is a very mature, caring young man who has a great heart and spirit that emerged when he was a youngster, a teenager. He is just what this city needs. The good folks of Lakewood will be so fortunate to have him representing him, and he can count on me for 500% support!
